Steam randomly releases updates, right?
#1
I'll come home to find no one on my server, and when I remote in to it I find that the server is out of date (per srcds.exe) and needs to be updated. Because all of the clients trying to connect have already received their Steam update, no one can connect to my server. I'm using Windows, so no -autoupdate command for me. I have built a utility to automatically shut down the server, start the update, then relaunch the server once done updating, but the problem is that Steam will release the updates randomly, and usually, during the day, so my server becomes immediately outdated.

Any ideas to get around this? If not, can a lot of us get together and ask Steam if they will have scheduled updates? Like... every Sunday and Wednesday at 4 AM? Then we could all use my autoupdate software to do it at that time :-)

Thanks.

P.S.
I'm still working on making my SRCDS Utilities available to the public under the name SUB (Source Utilities by [BR5DY]). Check that thread at this link.

They do have a e-mail list and will send an e-mail when an update is released.

Do you know where that is? Is the e-mail sent immediately when the update is released?

Thanks, Mooga, I appreciate it. However, I'd have to check my e-mail, then launch the update if I got an e-mail. I wish the -autoupdate command worked in Windows!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anybody have any ideas on this?

Thanks.

That sounds rather complicated.....

Maybe someone has made some sort of addon/plugin for outlook that launches various things when it recieves an email from a certain address....

A complete guess, might be way out of my depth Toungue

Haha, well, I could make an e-mail address solely for getting e-mail from Steam, then have a program check that mailbox every 5 minutes or so, and if a message is received from Steam, automatically launch the updater tool.....

but....

that's a lot of work.

Thanks Drocona, but I have a program to auto update and to restart srcds.exe. The issue I'm dealing with is detecting when an update comes out and then launching hldsupdatetool.

Well that doesn't work on linux either...

The autoupdate function in linux does exactly the same as the batch I made (and your program).

okay, today is a perfect example of my problem.

i tried to get on my server and i cannot connect: error "server uses different class tables".

of course, i know this means i just have to update it. i update it, and boom, it works.

the problem? the updates are released during the day, and my server is set to update at 5 AM every morning.

how can i have it detect when an update comes out and automatically update it?

i do know that when the server is out of date, a message appears on server console saying "Your server is out of date", etc. Is there any way to capture that into text form I could push to a program? It does not appear in the log files.

thanks.
