Use DNS instead of IP?
#1
I was woundering if you can somehow use a DNS instead of an IP when you launch the server, or somehow send your dns to the Steam servers, because I do not have a static IP.

I also with my other server, get a crash ever time a map is changed, I think it truely crashes when you go to select a class, of a fraction.
I can seem to get arround this if the server is empty and i change it using a remote rcon, but that is a horible way and only works half the time....

also, are there any useful server restart programs or anything like that incase the server crashes? I do have srcds-guardian.cmd but if it is any type of memory error, then I get a box that needs to be clicked before it can restart. : \...

Dont specify your IP in the start line? That will just use whatever it can so their would be no need to use a DNS name for that

but i need it to post the DNS to the steam/valve servers so if people added the server they can come back to it later after my external IP changes since its dynamic
#4
It dosent work like that.
The steam server only handles the list of servers, when someone adds you to the favorites the client just saves the IP

okay thanks, just woundering if steam could grab a dns it would be usefull, which they could then broadcast over for the servers they are showing
#6
That would be a nice thing for them to add.
You could put the DNS name in the MOTD and just tell people if it doesn't show in favorites add this.

yep yeap i've already done that : )
haha it'd be cool if like you know how on some web pages you hit "make this a homepage" or "add to favorites", well it'd be cool if they let you code that into your motd
#8
I saw you signed up for my site using a DNS hostname.
This was not supported with my website but because you did that i added it(it took 1 and a half hours due to difficulties).

How about, you have them add your server to your favorites, USING the DNS isntead of an IP.

like mine: zearm.bounceme.net:27015
[oh my goodness]
-YAY FOR GMOD!

zearm.bounceme.net:27015

Steam doesn't store hostnames. It resolves the hostname to IP and stores the IP.

Right. You have to tell the user to store the DNS and not the IP.
There is no way to automatically do that. At least not to my knowledge.

At least to my knowledge it is IMPOSSIBLE to store hostname in Steam favorites or in-game. There is NO WAY to get the DNS stored in the favorites instead of IP. There's no manual or automatical way to do it.

My knowledge about the topic is about one year old, so unless Steam has been patched in the past year to handle hostnames, then there is no way to store hostnames in favorites.

I was thinking more of a server-side script that would add the DNS to the users favorites. But again, I doubt it.

It's not possible.

Yeah, favorites are handled completely clientside, unless valve supplies a plugin interface for the client there won't be possibilities (and the won't release that interface because there would be cheaaatzzz)
