If your server supports HPET Windows server 2008 CAN reach 1000fps. However, Windows server 2003 can only reach 1000fps if acpi is turned off during the initial installation of server 2003. Even then you will be limited to only accessing one core and 1000fps will be highly unstable. Your best bet is to install a quality Linux distribution such as Debain (Ubuntu) or Slackware. Ofcourse, everyone has their own preference.

I'm running Windows Server 2008 and I am still only getting 500 FPS max. How do I enable HPET and get it up to 1000?

If you really need 1000FPS (and you probably don't), go with a *nix Distro.

I don't get what all this fuss about 1000FPS is...

I'll just say it again:
On all servers I have ever tested, any amount higher than ~700 FPS will DECREASE server stability and performance! 1000FPS being the worst.
The difference between servers FPS 512-700 is negligible, just stick with the max of windows anyway.

I currently Run a few 1000 FPS Server on my linux box. The server is a beast. I was never able to run 1000 FPS in windows but heard it was possible. The only problem with 1000 FPS in linux is you probably Will have to compile a new Kernel. I made a custom one anyway because it makes it very easy to increase stability and performance.

Your motherboard must support Hpet. In most cases theres an option in the BIOS to enable it.

Officially reboots don't count as downtime, more like "maintenance". Companies don't count it as downtimes too but you won't get a nice number saying 200 days up for example Toungue
