#1
Sad
I have windows server 2008 running on 1 gb ram p4-ht 2.4ghz 160gb hd i also have a 10mb cable internet connection.

now the problem i have is i just launched the server following the srcds guide and the server works but peoples ping is to high its 10 people with 66 tick rate. I have a friend that live 10 houses down and his ping connected to me is avg 80. Does any one know what is wrong or how to fix it.

What is ur ping when you are in a server? Also is this server hosted at your house?

Is your cable connection synchronous (meaning that you have 10Mb/s up & 10Mb/s down) shared (10Mb/s up and down together) or asynchronous (10Mb/s down and eg 1Mb/s up)?

Depending on your ISP this could even happen if the connection isnt a bottleneck -eg if they have "dumb" backbones (not checking where the connection has to go but routing the traffic to your ISP's data center and then back), or if he got an other ISP (they usually tend not to connect their backbones one to each other Toungue )

I advise not to use homeservers for hosting for the follwing reasons:
~you can't work, download or play on the internet anymore as this would bring lags to your server
~the connection usually isn't optimized for gameservers (lowest-cost routing), bringing pings around 10-50ms higher than the ones routet with "lowest-latency routing"
~a server at home tends to be more expensive (power, connection, spare parts, admin time,...) than any decent housing or renting.

Actually, it might not be cheaper but i recommend running a house server as long as you are prepared to work a bit harder for it and not 100% uptime. I have 20Mbps/5mpbs plenty for a populated server. I can browse the internet, even download linux and no lag. 40 bucks a month. True that the connection isnt optimized for game servers but more expensive? Nah. If you colocate, you still pay for power, connection, spareparts, admin time,.... unless you get a good deal. Most cost extra for managed. Then if you rent it I guess it could be cheaper but you have to use FTP which CAN be a pain and uses reasources on your CPU. Also your IP can change and that can be a pain in the ass. Plus then you dont own your server and you cant tweak it.
It's really a matter of opinion, didnt mean to beat you down d4f. Sorry if it sounded like i was Smile.

Home servers are WAY more expensive than colocating!

colocation: 80$ a month?

Home:
-Connection: 40$
-Power: 30$
-Server machine 100$
-backup parts: 5$

total for home: 175$ a month for the first year, after the first year the Server machine drops from the list (12x 100 = 1200$ for buying the server spread over the year)

Then there's also reliability which is priceless in a datacenter. Usually they have around 4-6 carriers, so you won't lose connection, plus there are technicians on the floor 24/7

I don't know but that's pretty normal price if you ask me?

I can get colocation for 25$/mo but I dont have much traffic with that, but I can also go to germany and get like 2TB transfer for 90$/mo

OK yes it is a homeserver, Two I don't pay for any of parts, power, net connection etc. and 3 I am on the computer about 10 hours a day so I have time. When I am in the server my ping is about 7-15 tops. BUT thats because i am connected to it through a router. I don't know my cable connection synchronous but its comcast all i know is that is its 10mb when i download something say a game demo i get speed of up to 1000kps and then gradually gets lower and stays at about 500kbs

@Drocona. Seriously $25? I want to colocate there. Cheapest I have found for a decent amount of bandwidth near me as been 150-200. Eh 2TB is ok but I am going to host multiple popular servers if i find a good spot so 2tb isnt big enough
@Technoboy Comcast may put a block once you use too much bandwidth.

Rofl. I hope you messed up kb/s (kiloBIT/second) and kB/s (kiloBYTES/second) Smile
If you really download with 100kb/s you got a 1Mb/s connection which is one of the slowest DSL-lines you can get Toungue
Btw: it's usual to have too high download rates at the beginning -due to the browser starting to precache downloads even before you click "ok". The download rate at the end should be your "real" rate Smile

I guess you try speedtest.net and then post the results here.
Anyway: homeservers are NOT able to handle gameservers, they can't even properly websites!
Either ask your parents to rent a gameserver for you or rent a root...
Btw: if you are "hosting" at home, you won't be able to be on the computer that long afterwards - the slightest work would bring your server to lag. Even when using an other computer and simply browsing the net you would have lags, so hf -you wont have many visitors ^^

d4f nah thats wrong. I host 3 100 tickrate servers off a server at home with a connection. No lag..... I used to host a website to lol. Get a good ISP you will be fine. I have FIOS with 20/5 for $40 a month. Thats plenty for a server.

Note that most people don't have 5mbit upload but more like 256-768kbit which is hardly good for 4-10 players 33 tick.

Technoboy, please find what your UPLOAD speed is, download doesn't matter
I'm sure you have A-synchronous, I believe comcast is a CABLE supplier, not DSL?
correct me if I'm wrong..

Thats what I am talking about I just got my FIOS installed the other day loving the 20/5 its awsome.

My team just rents a dedicated box, but i get a big discount because I went to college with one of the network admins, and I just helped him complete his cisco certification Smile. Data center is in ohio, core 2 Duo all the goods, 100Mbps up and down with 3TB per month, for 50 bucks lolol.

On a side not 25 a month for colocation does sound real cheap, whats the company???

Colocation that you find for $25 is usually using Cogent bandwidth, which is shit for gaming.

Just a note for you guys considering hosting at your house, there are several ISP's that do not allow servers, you should call them up and ask them before going through the trouble of putting one up.

Comcast is a cable supplier. The problem with hosting on cable is that it is a shared connection, so if there are many people in your area that use it, it will be slower than if you live in an area where there aren't many comcast customers.
