20 slot server on power laptop
#1
well i recently built a new desktop and thinking (well already there) to use my laptop as a LAN server

specs
AMD Turion TL-52 X2 1.8GHz
1066MHz FSB
3.0 GB RAM @ 667MHz
100 Mbps LAN plug
Running Vista Home Premium
5400RPM 3.0GB/s SATA 160GB

I ran SRCDS maxed out FPS (fps_max 1200) and it renders about 650 FPS tops, CPU usage was still low

Server runs 100 tick, rate 20,000, 100 updates/sec in and out

Seemed to run fine when i had 4 bots and me playing

load times are noticeably slow because of my HDD i assume... but gameplay is what i care about

What do you guys think of this idea

It should work but laptops are just not recommended as they can become hot and instable, they aren't made to be running 24/7/365. Who cares about loadtimes, you'll hardly notice it anyway Wink

thanks for reply

i have a 'cooling pad' under it to keep the laptop significantly cooler, the cpu frequnecy would drop once it it 53*C load but now it never touches 48.., and i only run it for LANs because university internet where im at blocks incoming ports
