TF2 server.cfg help?
#16
a server.cfg file can be as simple or complicating as you like.. you could make a very simple one like..

//server.cfg
hostname *server name*

and thats it. Everything will just get set to the defaults.

Thanks for the reply.

Oh, I understand that (I used to run an HLDS for TFC). Thing is, there are a bunch of tweaks that really make the server play well (such as mp_timelimit 0, mp_friendlyfire 0, and so on) plus some settings that are required to get it on the public server list (such as sv_lan 0, IIRC). If someone has a solid server.cfg file already, it makes real nice to use as a starting point.

I did grab down Baditude's list of cvars -- that will help. Right now I'm just fighting with getting the server listed in the public server list because I run it behind a firewall and I was thinking there might be a default switch somewhere I need to flip.

if your server isn't listed in public you have router and/or firewall problems, search the forums please as there are thousands of threads about that problem

Already spent ample time searching the forums; I don't have firewall problems. I even went so far as to route both UDP and TCP ports 27000-27030 to the box to be sure all was covered (27005 and 27015 are default). Someone elsewhere told me it takes a while for the master servers to pick up new servers so I'm hoping that's all it is.

It can take up to 30 minutes (the max I've ever seen) but if everything is set up correctly it shouldn't take more than 1 second.

But routers are always a problem, you're never sure if it will ever work at all.

did you declare the port in the startup commandline? (-port x)
did you check if the host has a firewall on it at all?

once your server is up, people external from your network can scan it immediately, they can just add your IP to their favs and refresh it and it will show up immediately if it is properly setup.

and i dunno what you're talking about Drocona, i never have any problems with a PROPERLY configured firewall/router; and i've been running gaming servers since qwtf...

There are some issues with routers. Some "less quality" routers, even with the proper ports open it will not allow a stable server output. I personally have never had this problem, but have worked with people that have and a simple router swap fixes the problem.

Sometimes routers will also forward port 27015 to some random port, and that will make it a real pain to find. You also shouldn't have to specify the port in the cmd line, it won't hurt. If it isn't specified though it will default to 27015.

I did not declare the port in the command line; it's grabbing the standard ports and working just fine on the LAN.

Yup -- my box, so that's not an issue. Smile It's Win2K3.

Hmmmmm.... Some others have said the master servers don't pick new servers up right away. Could also simply be that since I'm on the same segment the client automagically assigns it to the LAN tab rather than the Internet tab. Like I said, I can definitely play on it from here, the master servers are showing up when it sequences through it's startup (i.e., in the console window) so it knows what they are just fine.

Well, tell me if anyone can see it -- it's called "Domicile". The server.cfg file I have is pretty straightforward -- I have sv_lan 0, hostname "Domicile", sv_region 0, mp_timelimit 20, mp_friendlyfire 0 and I think that's it.

I've had 4 routers from different manufacturers here at my house and none of them did what they were supposed to do, things like setting DMZ, all nice set up as it should but it just wouldn't work.
FTP server port pointing to the router while I disabled the router FTP server and specified my internal ip and forwarded + enabled ftp transfers from the outside to the inside. Guess what.. NOTHING, still the damn FTP server from the router showing up while it was disabled in every way.

All these routers ended up in the dumpster, got myself a high quality 8 port 1gbit/s belkin switch also used in small data cabins (it was provided with 19" brackets and stuff too) and first time I connected it everything worked like a charm and have never had any trouble at all, both hosting from the direct connected server and from the LAN behind it.
