you can use mtrg or hotsanic, the latter will show cpu usage, disk, bandwidth, all kinds of other stuff if you want. cricket is a good one too.

iftop is good. You can leave it running through screen, too.

So gentoo is actually the best, ubuntu is preferred over debian but you actually want to use slackware. Why are you using ubuntu which is better than debian if you actually want to use slackware but in the end gentoo is better? dude you lost me!
