if they're not the right extension they won't work, so ".bsd or whatever" does matter. they should be .bsp not .bz2 or anything else.

what happens when you type "map mapname" in the console?
EDIT: this may be a stupid question but the maps are ON the server itself right not in your local machine? and the question above is for the server console not your local machine.

my server is on a laptop and i put the maps in my server folder. so when i start my server and it goes through the maps on the list it just says unknown map
like the name is ragdollfall.bsp so i put that in the maps folder and then i type the name ragdollfall.bsp into the mapcycle.txt

then either the map is not in the right place or srcds thinks the map is invalid (ie not the correct format), don't know what else to say besides that, there's no other options either srcds sees it or it doesn't.

Hi, i have this problem and im not sure how it was sorted. My map is on my machine, and i cannot put it onto the server ( i dont know how) It is a BSP file saved in /email/counter-strike-source/cstrike/maps It works when i choose "create server" in css. But i cannot get it to work in my dedicated server. When i type "Map chasm" (chasm.bsp name) in the dedicated server console, it says
"] map chasm
CModelLoader::Map_IsValid: No such map 'chasm'
map load failed: chasm not found or invalid"
Any way to help me?

You have to copy the map to the dedicated server folder called maps... Dedicated servers have nothing to do with client programs like CS:Source or HL etc...
So go to the foldeer where you installed the dedicated server (probably C:\SRCDS most people use that) then click cstrike->maps and put it in there.
Read the rest in the post above, it explains all.

Sorry for being a TOTAL noob, but is srcds the Source Dedicated server that is in Steam Tools. I cannot find a srcds folder, only srcds.exe. There is also no "Maps" folder in the Source Dedicated Server folder. only Bin, Cstrike, and Platform, none of these containing a Maps folder.
Thanks!
