Installing Issues: Painfully slow
#1
Hi,

I've decided to resurrect my server, (1.8 Celeron, 512MB Memory, 2mbit/s connection).

I did everything the guide said, but the server installs VERY slowly. After about 30 minutes of typing the install game command, I've got this far:

I don't know whats causing it. Its just so painfully slow. I tried this a couple days ago. Left the installer running inside a screen for about a day, it didn't get very far. Finally I got frustrated and quit. I waited and tried again, but I'm still having the same issues.

Any Ideas why? Any help appreciated Smile

can you test you connection speed to make sure that you are getting your full 2mbps?

Fixed.

And as for the speedtest, I'm getting speeds ranging from 300 - 400kbit/s from US Servers (I'm located in New Zealand).

Still it shouldn't be taking this long right? Since my Windows Steam Client updates at a higher speed (Up to 100KB/s at a time - almost 1mbit/s)

300-400kbit = 37.5-50KB/sec i don't think the steam binaries(hldsupdatetool) use the same content servers as steam clients do, therefore you're only using certain steam servers in the us, as far as client wise goes, it's probably using more local content servers so you'll see better speeds with client than the hldsupdatetool.

1.2G total

Thats the size of the linux server, 2 or 3 other maps than stock maps. so if you're getting around ~30KB/sec yeah it'll take a bit. esspecially if there is high load on the steam servers, then it'll be even lower ;\

Yeah Sad Its been downloading cs_havanna for about 6 hours now. The steam servers must be under a great deal of load for some odd reason.

I'm downloading 2.5mbps so, nothing wrong here :S since 2.5mbps is the max download for an updating server

so this is just steam that is taking a long time to download or everything on this box is taking a long time to download?

Just steam. I get my full 2mbit/s (1mbit/s worst case scenario) for other things.

Steam update was VERY slow, so I obtained the server by downloading it onto another server and then downloading it from there onto my server.

I appear to have figured out why my steam updates very slowly / not at all.

I ran a 'netstat' while steam was updating, and it seemed to be connected to 69.28.153.82 and 68.142.88.34.

Traceroutes:

Then for some reason steam decided to connect to an Australian server, which is quite close to me. (Why not before?)

But its still pretty unstable.

It seems that for some reason my connection to steam servers is flaky at best, hence the issues. The server works, but intermittently. It was just pulling about 100KB/s from the Australian server.
