Laggy LAN server...
#1
Hi all,

I have a Dedicated LAN server, running Windows Server 2003 connected to a router by Ethernet. I run the srcds command line server setup for an 8 player server, with the fpsbooster running. When I connect to it, my ping immediately shoots up to between 1000 and 1400. I can't figure out what is wrong or what to do about it. I followed the guides on laggfree.com, but I still have the problem.

Server Specs:
P3 750
256MB RAM
36GB SCSI HDD (Was a free system, so the HD was a nice surpirse Toungue)
ATI Rage IIC AGP Card (I think, but am not too sure.)
Ethernet to WRT54G Router

Client Specs:
Pentium D 3GHz
2GB RAM Dual Channel
WD Raptor 150
6800GS 256MB
Linksys 54G PCI Card to WRT54G Router

Cheers,

Hmm I'm not sure about this but everytime I check my server on WinXP it uses around 3-400 megs of memory. However I have no idea if it's full or not at those times. 256MB seems a bit low to me it might cause teh problem.

Hmm...I didn't think the RAM would be such a problem, but maybe it is - I should be upgrading the server soon. One other question, is it ok to run a webserver (IIS6.0, 3-4 sites) and the LAN server on the same machine? Would you say I needed a better spec machine?

Well just hit cnrl+alt+del and see how much you are using of your memory. I'm using approx 500MB memory with Apache, FTP, MySQl and a SRCDS.

Your processor will hold.. I think RAM is your main problem

Thanks for the tip, I'll try it tomorrow as I'm about to hit the sack.

I'm probably soon going to get another P3 board that supports 133FSB, as this current one (Gigabyte 6WMM7 I think) is max 100MHz and the chip is a 1GHz 133FSB, and as it has a multi of 7.5 it only goes to 750MHz. Would the increase to 1GHz be worth it?

Cheers mate Smile

You will most certainly notice the difference. I overclocked my 866MHz to 1001Mhz and it made a huge difference. I run a 18 player zombie server on it (10 Zombie bots), it stresses the CPU pretty bad because of the bots but it's pretty steady at 80%. Which I think is pretty good for a 1GHz

That's an idea then. I work in an IT repair centre and theres normally old systems lying around, so I'll grab one and have a tinker.

I did the memory check, and with me and 3 bots in the server, it was down to 40MB free. This is with MYSQL, IIS6 and other web stuff running in the background.
