New Server, Rates Help Needed!

hey i jus setup a server on my:

Pentium 4 2.66ghz
512mb DDR
80gb HDD 7200rpm
radeon 9200 128mb
4mbps/400kbps Cable

how many players could i host on here and what rates and tickrate should i use?

Server is fpsboosted, pingboosted and has mani admin on it.

8 players tick 33, set your maxrate somewhere around 6500-7000 and fine tune it a bit, since your uplaod speed is the limiting factor you will not have to worry about your system specs.

Was just thinking you might be able to squeeze out 10 players but you might get choke problems then. You would have to lower your sv_maxrate a bit.

Theres a pretty accurate formula for calculating the maxrate:

bandwidth*128/players
Mostly the actual trasfer rate is a bit lower than what you set maxrate to so you can up it a bit.

Also do you need help with the other settings like updates etc? or can you figure that out yourself Smile

Yea my bad bro. The Y post was totally randmon. Just looked alot like another post. I wouldnt push any more then a 33 tic and 6 players. sv_minrate 3500 sv_maxrate 5500, sv_minupdaterate 33, sv_maxupdaterate 33. I would try that and see how it works. Its not calculated for your exact server but those rates are for a slower server. My server is 1024 up and i run sv_minrate 4500 and sv_maxrate 9000, sv_minupdaterate 33, sv_maxupdaterate 33, and it runs like 12 with no lag. Pings start jumpin over 14 players.

would there be a way to get my server to run 10 players with no choke?
400kbps upload which is 48kb/s

for 8 players id need sv_maxrate 6000 right?

for 10 players id need sv_maxrate 4800 right? what about minrate? also would the pingbooster or fps booster have anything to do with the choke on the server?

also if the sv_maxrate was set to 4800 for the 10man server, then what would the rates need to be set in the client?
i know rate would be 4800, and by setting the sv_maxupdaterate to 33 then cl_updaterate would be 33, but what about cl_cmdrate? would having cl_cmdrate set to a high number cause choke to occur? because im now thinking this is what my choke problem is...

Also does higher tickrate require extra bandwidth? or just more CPU consumption?

If you want to run more players you need a better upload bandwidth. That is the only way. Settings will not help. 6 players with lag could be adjusted to have no lag. But you cant run 10 with 400KBPS, you get over 5-6 people pings are gonna skyrocket to 200+. A upload bandwidth of 1024KBPS would yield pretty good results with 10 players. Which is exactly what i have to work with.

my upload is 900...
i run my server with 16 slots, and the rates are default.
i dont have any problems with choke and lag

If you run it like that it's all luck if it lags or notWink

default rates are unlimited while you only have 7.03 kB/s per slot. If all slots go 6.5 at the same time, pings will increase a bit, when over 7.03 you get real lag.

Just depends on client settings and which way they walk, like staying together etc, camping the bomb (this requires shitloads of bandwidth somehow).

I wouldn't take the risk running it without limits on the rates lol

hey im back Big Grin

well iv been looking around for help on my server and found a little SourceMM plugin called RateTweak BETA1d, this build of ratetweak seems to have really shaped up.
With this plugin 8 players for my server is no problem, i am going to try 10 players next.

It basically changes client rates when choke is detected, then resulting in the server having less choke and lag. This plugin for Source MetaMod really helped me out alot, sorted all of my choke problems.

I have my server set to 50tick, sv_maxrate 25000 sv_minrate 2500, sv_maxupdaterate 50 sv_minupdaterate 33.

The reason i set maxrate so high is because Ratetweak uses rates inbetween the max rate and min rate, so if there is only a couple players in the server a rate near to the maxrate would probably be used, but as soon as the server gets more crowded RateTweak uses lower rates to reduce choke, lag and ping spikes.
