What should i do?
#1
Okay so i need a small project.

And i already got 2 ideas, but can't really deceit if they are usefull or not.

Idea 1:
Stand alone Fast Download Server.
Well kinda the same as http://forums.srcds.com/viewtopic/11604
But with a standalone web server so there will be no need for any other things.

Idea 2:
A gui for the hldsupdatetool....

This.

You should totally take Apache's sourcecode, then make a user-friendly front end, with easy to configure options in a nice GUI, and if you could, a nice diagnostics tool to the occasional firewall configuration nightmare.

a fastdl server that would automagically know which files to server and which not would be nice. so you need only to start it with e.g. the game directory as argument

I made a VB6 Web server a few years ago that can do exactly what BehaartesEtwas said but now days I know better than to phrase all the HTTP headers and do all the web server stuff myself nowadays I would just use python with a library Toungue

then you could do it platform independent as well :-)

Would be using C# if I made it.
But I might still try and make it work with Mono

So much for cross platform :\

Are you sure you don't want to use Apache's (or even a tiny, but established http server engine) as the base code? this looks pretty good for your purposes.

The only reason I'm pushing for you to use an entire HTTP server engine, is... well, for the purpose of standalone-ness. Plus, you get complete control over what goes on in that server Smile

Well then I would not wanna use Apache if I wanted to know what is going on....

Second, I can only code C# pretty good at it tho.

Third, You would still be able to run it on Linux with XPS or Mod_Mono.
And for standalone'ness I don't see an issue in bundling it with IIS Express as that is what it is made for.

Could you explain your position on that a bit?

Absolutely, I love C# too Smile Did you check out that link I posted?

I'm pretty sure IIS Express is built strictly for windows platforms. Ya, I guess there are emulation programs on linux, but...
Also, could you explain to me what XPS is? I only get results for an XPS viewer on Linux Sad

I would be very interested in implementing this especially if it was designed for Windows and IIS Toungue

I'm all for having this on Windows, too, although I'm trying to help keep Nisd in the multiplatform area Smile

<- Windows lover, any ways said the wrong thing, was suppose to write XSP (look down the page)

Any ways, making sure it supports mono is as close to cross-platform i get.
