Router/Switch?
#1
Whats the difference in these? How do they make use of my bandwidth? Is there any difference? I heard that a switch gives full bandwidth to both computers? Is this true?

a router is a router, it routes to multiple computers, and provides firewall protection, and assigns ip's to each of the devices attached to it, a switch just provides the devices with bandwidth/internet, and does not provide firewall protection and does not assign ip's. So you would need static ip's from your host. and set them manually in the server/device.

In usual cases, houses have a Modem which takes a phone line or cable line and converts it to Ethernet, which then people use a Brouter. (Bridging-Router) Which usually has several ports on it, and sometimes wireless. A switch is useless unless you have more ports than your Router can support. I would recommend getting a Linksys, Netgear or DLink router with 4-5 ports or so with wireless to use with your Modem.

I am a computer/network technision (with countless PC and Network certifications)

I only use D-Link, weather its a router, switch, NIC, wireless card.

The only thing I use thats non-dlink is hardware firewalls (I use sonicwall for that), but if DLink made one, I would drop sonicwall in a heartbeat

Even better don't use routers at all unless you can get professional cisco/3com/HP and some others ofcourse.

I use professional 19" rack switches in my house and a gateway server, last router I owned I literally threw out the window (yes it was cheap homerouter crap)
