Kernel/Distro Optimization for gameservers/webhosting
#1
Hi,

I would like to obtain some information on optimization for CentOS 5.5 64bit. I plan to run cPanel and game servers (we need 500FPS/66TICK on each server). Any guide or other useful information would be appreciated. Trying to make the move from Windows.

This for a GSP company.

Thanks

see my signature. but I strongly recommend not using centos, instead try debian 64 bit or so...

Either recompile the kernel or download a realtime kernel for CentOS 5.5 64bit and install it on your system, then load it with grub and reboot your system. If you're inexperienced, I would recommend the second option over the first. There's nothing wrong with running CentOS for gameservers.. I'm yet to see a justified reason with proof that Debian is more stable than CentOS and have not experienced any problems myself (in the past 2 years), however if you intend on running cPanel and gameservers on the same box, don't do it. That will be unstable, I promise you.

True. But:
Debian runs fine out of the box. With CentOS you need to modify the system first.

Regarding stability and security they are probably as good as the other.

Ah, so that's the reason everyone loves Debian so much, less work = more fun Big Grin

I already tried that wiki. It doesn't work for CentOS.

You see I need to run cPanel. I dont need 999999999999999999999 STABLE FPS. All I need is 500FPS. And have yet to find a realtime kernel for CentOS 5.5 64bit... or even guide for it.

Why do you need to run cPanel?

Always try to keep web services separate from game services...

I need cPanel to run my website. We don't sell webhosting but I can only afford 1 box. I was thinking about using LAMP w/o a panel.

If you are planing on running multiple vhosts you should look into suexec+fcgid instead of lamp.

Nope, only 1 website

cPanel isn't worth it for just one website... Id just get a shared hosting package for hosting your website off your server.

Alright, the website is being moved over to a VPS from my datacenter (they sell those too.) so now this will be a gameservers only box. Any recommendations on Kernel and other stuff.

I still would like to use CentOS.

May members of this community are Debian fans. You would probably get better support from us if you chose their favored OS.

I personally use Windows so don't expect anything from me Toungue

CentOS has a very old kernel and probably very old glibc. Newer kernels are usually (much) better for game servers. So unless you want to optimize much, I recommend Debian or Ubuntu (which is btw. not my favorite distro - I use gentoo Toungue).

I turned ubuntu my back. I used it for my laptop. But from 9.x to 10.x they removed the hardware support. Since that time no more ubuntu. Updates should increase supported hardware not decrease.

For servers I would always reccomend against ubuntu. With servers you want stability. They release when a date comes and always add newewst versions. Not the best way regarding stability...
