I've seen dedicated servers using Intel Atom, there relatively cheap? How do they run with srcds? Slots/Tick? Atom 330 Dual Core 1.6Ghz

Considering the fact that SRCDS does not support multicore processors it will only be able to use one core, so only 1.6 ghz. However I've never used them for hosting so I wouldn't know how much they would be able to run but you are probably best off getting a more powerful processor .

personally i would not go with an intel atom processor, yes they are relativly cheap but there meant to be mobile chips not server equipment. do what spantanfrog said get a more powerfule cpu, but if your on a tight bugget go with an amd athlon64 x2

Yes, AMD has the cheapest processors...
Dual core 3.1 is only around $80.00 you know!

Does SRCDS even work on an Atom?
Thought I read somewhere that there are quite some troubles running on that proc.

Atom are very crappy... They are used for mini laptops...
Do not buy. O_o

i dont think the price of a intel atom dedi box is that cheap for its performance $99 O.o id rather have a Pentium4 server probably could get more out of that

Intel atom works fine in my ASUS eee for work
But not running servers on it

Everyone has something different to say about the Atom.
Some people claim that run like a 1.0GHz P3 and others claim they are FASTER then anyone can imagine. One thing is for sure though, I wouldn't run SRCDS on one if I had the choice. Also, the Atom is NOT a dual core. It's a single core with hyper threading.

Please do not PM me for server related help fqdn Wrote:if you've seen the any of the matrix movies, a game server is not all that different. it runs a version of the game that handles the entire world for each client connected. that's the 2 sentence explanation.

In simple people's terms: "The Intel Atom is a NO NO for servers"

Wasn't the atom using different instructions than all the other "normal" CPU's so running an SRCDS would fail anyway?

Has anyone got any feedback from running a SRCDS on an atom platform ? I have to find a solution to run a SRCDS on a quiet and cheap server at home, and the ION platform could match to that. But I don't want to buy a machine and get stuck ...

Like everyone above says, do NOT do it!
If you want for quiet and cheap, just useone of the lower C2D Exxxx versions, they are VERY cheap these days and are capable of running a lot of powerful programs. Also the eco series of them run on very few watts!

Actualy there is dual core Atom's, they are not hyper threaded. Also they use SSE/SSE2/SSE3, but they dont support SEE4.x. And some are x86_64, I don't see a reason why the SRCDS should not run on them. Although performance will be questionable.
