Setting up a dedicated server... AMD or Intel?
#1
I am new to this forum and have just got into online gaming. I am a huge fan of TF2 and have been logging a lot of hours since Christmas. I have a fiber optic internet connection so I figured I might as well put up my own server but before I buy any hardware I was wondering if I should go with an AMD or an Intel processor? Is one better than the other in this type of setting? I have used AMD for all my desktop builds just because of price but am definitely willing to move to Intel for this server if necessary.

Thanks a ton in advance for your help!

I searched the forum for this and couldn't find anything on it but if there is something then you can just forward me.

Again, thanks a ton! I think this site is going to be just what I need to get my server up. Smile

while not being my best subject, i would say you should focus more on what type (dualcore or quadcore) rather then brand, however you're probably going to see a lot of people saying intel Toungue

Thanks for the advice! I have looked at Quadcore AMDs and can pick one up for around $150. Or I can get a dual core for half that. Is there a big benefit of quad over dual?

with a quad core your server will be able to hold more slots, more slots= bigger severs, or more servers

EDIT

also what is your internet speed

Within the state (Utah) it is 46031 kb/s Download and 17201 kb/s Upload.
If I ping NYC it is 12514 kb/s Download and 1952 kb/s Upload.

Thanks for your help!

If you have a tight budget, go for AMD Phenoms. If not, it really doesn't matter.

If you have the coin, a Q6600 is always a good high end starter CPU. I've never had any issues with it, and it's also an easily overclocked CPU. You could probably run a couple servers off the box given your good connection.

Intel is superior at processors at the moment, if you are on a budget, go with an AMD phenom.

Thanks!

If I was to get a AMD Phenom 9850 BLACK EDITION 2.5GHz how many servers do you think I could host? One per core? Would my internet connection be fast enough for that?

I just updated my sig with my speeds taken on a Friday morning. They are below.

These are my actual connections. With the fiber optic it is pretty fast.
