In an ideal situation I would have a hardware firewall and there wouldn't be a need for software security. However depending on your set up, you might want security software. I would use Window's Firewall and McAfee (since I have exp with McAfee). Third party software firewalls are generally a really pain in the ass, so I don't mess with them.

Is AVG good for a free version? I'm looking for a free version, and love AVG here at home.

Why would you need to put anti-virus on your server? Do you give out remote desktop to people? Its a waste of resources.

Generally the server doesn't open any files handled by clients so there's not really any need for security on it but. I have used AVAST for years on my personal computer and on my stream server. Tried most AV programs but this one beats them all IMO. It's free (the home version) and it gets updated once a day on average, sometimes more.

I doubt you have a Hardware Firewall on your servers unless you personally configured the data center. Also, McAfee actually makes a great business level product. And once your working at a business level you have to purchase software, not use the free home versions. From my experience, McAfee has a lot of nice features for managing multiple clients and servers. It also lets you manage how it scans, what it scans, and what processes are of more or less risk.

For a real server, I would take McAfee over the free ones any day!

Mooga, Mcafee was always bad, it wastes resources and has a bad detection rate.
