[Solved] Using assets from DVD
#1
I want to install a l4d dedicated server on my linux box but I don't want to download all the files, my bandwidth is far too limited for that. Is there a way to copy all the files needed off my l4d DVD to the install directory and then install the dedicated server only downloading whats needed?

If your bandwidth is far too limited for downloading the dedicated server files, how do you expect to be able to handle the traffic from the connecting clients, once you have started your server?

Server is mainly for our LAN games. I mean size not speed. I have a 20GB cap per month.

Damn... 20GB, I download that in 2 hours :|

Well anyway, you can get the content from the gfc or gcf files (not sure what the exact extension is) in your steamapps folder and extract them to the dedicated server mod folder, this way you only have to download the server files, not the actual game files.

Ok, just so people know:
If your install is e.g. /etc/steam:

Copy your game install (c:\program files\steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead\left4dead\) to /etc/steam/l4d/

so you would have /etc/steam/l4d/left4dead/*

then run '/etc/steam/steam -command update -game l4d_full dir .'
