Firewall Discussion

Why are you so worried about a " secure " server. The worst case is that your game server files gets deleted ? You should have a local backup anyways. Web Hosting is a different matter.

There are many good reasons to keep a server secure. There is NO reason to keep a server of any type insecure. NO reason.

I am not saying to go out of your wy to make it insecure or have it insecure, but also having a firewall degrades the performance of the servers.

I'm not sure if we are talking about gameservers or file hosting...either way you should run a firewall. One of my boxes got hacked, apparently it was pumping out a ton of bandwidth which would have cost me £150 in over charges, fortunately my provider picked up on it and I had the box formatted with the firewall enabled this time.

Only if you don't know what you're doing.
Ideally, you want a dedicated hardware firewall... but in these situations that's not possible.

How does knowing what you are doing in regards to a firewall make it not degrade the performance , you are wasting resources as well as performance for something that is not needed, worst case you can reimage the whole drive in ~30 minutes. Also a hardware firewall is not exactly a cheap option and your return would not be worth it.

After my experience without running a firewall, I'll keep my firewall.

Thanks.

erm.... Seriously?

I am asking for the sake of everyone else. If the server is un-secure, who would use it as a backup solution or a storage solution?

I do believe ComputerHelper did say

ComputerHelper Wrote:The FTP is not server related, its just like an online back up. You pay per GB, you get an account, you back up your files. DONE

Where did web hosting come from, weren't we talking about data back up and a storage solution in general?? And who said if someone purchase said solution that they would only host maps?

As far as firewalls go for file hosting/storage, it does not at all hinder the servers performance. For it is just a file server. They are not running rapidshare. Even then it would not do any damage. And yes, not knowing what you are doing with a firewall, be it hardware or software base, you can reduce performance. But if configured properly it will not.

And sorry for such a delayed reply.......

me? I am glad there is a firewall on, if you dnt have a firewall on your server(s) no matter what their function is, you deserve to be hacked. Even a basic firewall.
