Well I hope by hard drives u mean some sort of SSD or other type of flash memory, because HDDs are slowly getting outdated

An ssd is the same thin as a USB thumb drive only we can use them to run our programs, os, exc.

It's faster and more reliable then a hdd because of the lack of moving parts but also more expensive

We can use USB's to run our programs, os, exc...
Anyway I don't think SSD's are that amazing really. They use more power per gigabyte than hard drives, more easily fragmented AND cost a lot more. Also right now the size of them is pretty damn small but that will go up in time Wink.
Those are my mine things agaist SSD's for now Smile.

There were many things going against magnetic storage when it first was introduced, up until then everything had used analog methods of recording information (punch cards, vinyl records, microdots, cellulose acetate (still the preferred medium for archival storage of films because of its longevity, reliability, and inexpensive storage and maintenance costs) , etc) every new technology initially has resistance to being adopted mainstream until it too is eventually overtaken by a superior product. The fact is that if it were not for the invention of perpendicular recording hard drive sizes may never have gone over about 500 gigs as current hard drives were limited by the data density of current platters, either that or a new larger standard would have to be introduced.

Even in their current infancy SSD outperform HDD's in several important areas chiefly being noise and longevity since they have no moving parts they produce no noise, and as long as data is not continually written to the same sector (even this limitation is fast becoming obsolete.) SSD's have great data retention again due to the lack of moving parts and magentic fields (not platter crashes to worry about, and no bit error rate). However if you are seriously worried about keeping information in a readable format for 120+ years I suggest you invest in some aluminum and a laser engraver cause that block of aluminum will still be there long after your HDD and CD's have turned to dust. They also feature impressive read/write and random seek times because there are no moving parts the speed of the drive is no longer limited by the data density/RPM of the drive, you don't have to wait for your data to pass under the read head.

Once they get the kinks worked out with the erase/write cycles (which even with today's size HDD's and the current 1,000,000 cycle limit it will be about a decade before wear out becomes and issue, just make sure you disable the swap otherwise you will burn out that sector in about a year). Really the only thing preventing me from switching to SSD right now is the price and size.

Really though the idea of traditional fast ram and slow disks (storage) may soon go away with the perfection on memristors its a material that remembers the last resistance that it had applied to it (a resistor that remembers) meaning that when you turn your computer off all the information that was stored in RAM would still be there when the computer is turned on. Imagine the speed of RAM with the data permanence of a hard drive, seriously amazing, your computer would turn on instantly because it would not have to load anything from the hard drive it would all be stored on the "RAM". Perhaps in the near future we might see memristors coupled with SSD's for a nice trade off between speed/space/price.

I said it before and I'll say it again I believe that the technical limitations are too great for your idea of an ion cloud based storage device.

these are all true, but the proformance is a HUGE factor, I used my first ssd in my friends Core i7 Buil (See it in Harware and Software) It is faster then any Reptor or SSCI drive I've ever used

Btw I just noticed I have over 200 posts ^.^

Well guys,

I have an update for ya.

While working out my operational formulas i realized that actually indexing information is going to be a pain. So, i am working on a little different approach. With a full ION field it would be almost impossible (ATM at least) to capture each piece of info.

So, I am working on a pattern based storage with the thought of the ION cloud. Once i have my CAD done ill post what the thought will be on its look. I am working with a buddy to come with the case which we are looking at 3 main components - Glass, Copper, and Aluminum.

I will keep you posted.

well I was doing some surfing on the web, and I after Google translated the Russian for me, it seams the Russians have the same idea as you, but they put a more bad-ass spin on it. What it seams they are doing it using some type of laser to encode information onto glass with a aluminum backing. They can encode TB's of data onto the peace of glass that will fit into my pocket, but there is one catch (the bad-ass part too) the laser makes the glass radioactive. BTW it was posted on a site in 2005 so who knows if there still doing it, but its one hell of an idea.
