How many servers? (E2180, 2GB RAM)
#1
How many servers can I run at this machine:
Processor: E2180 @ 2.0GHz (Dual Core).
OS: Windows 2003 Enterprise.
Memory: 2GB RAM
Storage: 1TB Harddrive (7200 RPM)
Connection: 25/25mbit

How many servers with how many slots and what tickrate? FPS per server? Would I gain alot by switching to Linux?

My guess would be 30 slots per core @100tickrate
I don't have too much experience with the "lower end" of the Dual Core procs but I'm interested if anyone has tested it on this CPU since I got one lately (but it's for webhosting so no gameservers there Toungue)

amount I gave is for games that do NOT use the orangebox engine.
You won't gain anything switching to Linux.
FPS 512.

So, 25/25mbit will be enough for 30x2 slots at 100 tick?

I have an E2220 with 3 gigs of ram, but I can't do anything with it because stupid Fios blocks the ports for hosting game servers, and business plans run at $150 a month.

From what I heard, you can call Verizon and have them open the ports for you.

But I have residential, and the guy said game hosting was a "Business Application". I also tried opening them myself and canyouseeme.org said "connection refused".

You can safely run 60 slots (30 per core) total with 100 tickrate at 512 FPS. Your network connection is fine. As for anyone else running game servers with that processor, most likely not going to find many. Most run with a quad core E4210+ or Q9400+.

By the specs you gave, that server is definitely not intended or built for game hosting. The proportion difference in hardware is the reason i say this. With such a large HDD and so little RAM and CPU that will definitely effect your game servers performance. Especially reg. Also Windows 03' Ent is not really the best choice, simply because it has to much running in the background. This operating system is designed for enterprise level web applications and data storage.

So, in this case. Your best choice (if you only have Win 03 Ent and Linux) would be Linux (CentOS 5 is recommended). You will get a performance increase out of it, simply because you want need hardly anything to run the gameservers. Also, a smaller hard drive with higher RPM is also recommended. For example, a 143GB 15,000RPM would be good, smiply because GS's do not take that much room. if you want bigger then you next level up would be 300GB 10,000 RPM.

I hope that was helpful. I will soon be righting a complete guide to hosting gameservers.
