Source Mod or Beetles Mod for TF2 server
#1
Hey guys.

Well I have a bit of a problem here. Ive setup 4 TF2 dedicated servers on my home server box (all of which work perfectly using different ports) and have them configured as far as i'd like to and im just about to install psychostats on them all running into 1 MySQL database (ive done plenty of web design with PHP and MySQL so no issues there).

However, As it says in the thread subject, I don't know whether I should use Beetlesmod or Source Mod for admin. My understanding is that Beetlesmod is a more gameplay orientated plug-in and source-mod is more designed for daft but entertaining little scripts as its easier to make them for.

Now that presents a problem for me. 1 of the servers is meant to be fairly vanilla server (only changes being respawntime, sv_alltalk 1 and classlimits on a couple of maps), a fun server (not your typical silly mario_kart_crap, but some fun maps with sv_alltalk 1, sv_cheats 1,), another server with same config as the first for my clans maps (theres about 3 decent mappers in my clan) and the fourth being just an insanity server running dm_hans, mp_friendlyfire 1, sv_gravity 500, you'd see why thats funny if you have a server filled with 15 or so people like that, bloody hilarious. and the 4th being simply for random things like 1v1 for guys who want to battle it out but this won't be on 24/7.

So could anyone enlighten me to a little more to the difference between SM and BM.

Cheers
Adam

First off, are those 24-man servers? If so, that server better have a Q6600 or higher...
Also, bandwidth could be an issue running a server from your house.

As for SM and BM.
BM is a LOT easier to configure. It has all the "normal" admin features built right in to the mod. However, BM is limited because of the lack of plugins. It also has a tendency to break after large updates... SM generally does not.

SM is harder to configure but give you a LOT more freedom because of plugins and group settings. However, many things are not built directing into SM requiring you to find the required plugins.

Also, enabling cheats on a public server is a BAD idea. Mainly, all users can enable things like noclip and godmode. Fun for a few min, maybe?

Please do not PM me for server related help

SourceMod is just better. You can find plugins for just about anything you want to do, and it includes tons of base plugins that give you everything you need to get started.

There's also a huge SM community who will help you if you get stuck.

If you can't configure SM, you shouldn't be running a server IMHO.

They are all 12 slot. Although the chances of any one of them being filled 12 slots at the same time is highly unlikely. Its a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo in my server. Its got 1GB of RAM right now but im actually going out tomorow to grab some and bump that up to 3GB.

Bandwidth, Don't you just hate ADSL? I'd love a symmetrical T1 line but cash isn't in hand for it. Sad
I have 8mbit (with an actual uprate of 448kbit). Im bassically banking (fairly realistically) on none of the server ever being full at the same time. The clan map server will likely have a fairly regular flow of traffic and the standard server we are yet to see how much that will pick (im running that for my friends new clan as i know most of the players already). I'd assume that will be regular too but i wouldn't expect to ever have more than 20 users between them at any one time so if it becomes an issue at all i'll just turn down the tick rate.

Anyway, BM vs SM
Well by the sounds of it SM is probably the better option. I shouldn't have an issue configuring it (hey, if i can learn linux after being a windows user pretty quickly im sure i can configure an admin plug-in Smile

I'll go download it now and report back how it goes.

Cheers Guys

Oh, something else I forgot to ask also...

Is it possible to have your maps download from another FTP or HTTP server on the web via a redirect. When we've been playing with maps server this weekend with about 7 people, its been fairly acceptable pings of 70-120 but shoots up to 450+ when someone is downloading the map (which is a no-brainer). So is it possible to so something like this? My friend runs a small web-hosting company so i could get then hosted with him no issue.

Yes, skyride, look at the sv_downloadurl command. It's HTTP download.

512kbps upload won't get you 8 players on TF2 though.... so I'm afraid that's not going to work at all.
Also on a side note, don't waste your money on the RAM, unless you have another reason to buy it, you don't need it for the SRCDS.

Ok, hmm.....

I'll see how it goes. Just out of interest drocona, how would i work out the size of each tick? Its obviously going to be more, with more players. But for example, what size would 1 tick be to a player when there was 5 players in the server?

I'm not sure what you mean by "The size of each tick", are you talking about the server tickrate and how much they increase resource usage?
