A few questions regarding a LAN server and old specs

Question
Hi all,

I have a few questions regarding running srcds on Windows on an old Laptop of mine.

Me and a few mates from my Uni want to set up a CSS LAN server (Yes, I've checked - it is allowed on LAN, but Web gameservers are prohibited.) and I've got the challenge of setting it up.

I have an old Compaq Armada M300 Laptop which I'm intrigued to see if it could run it. Using Windows. I tried Ubuntu last night, and got it working, but would feel more comfortable configuring and adminning using Windows.

The specs:
Pentium 3 600MHz
320MB RAM
12GB HDD
4MB ATi Graphics
Intel 10/100 LAN Adapter
100/1000Mbit LAN backbone

The prospective server:
CSSource
8-12 Slot

OS wise, I'm not sure what to run it on. The 3 that are obvious are XP, 2000 and NT4.0 - baring in mind the specs, which of those 3 would you say to use? At the moment, 2000 is top in my mind due to the security of NT4.0, however I would like opinions from others. The server will not access the Internet at all.

Also - I've read of "stripped" OS's - what's the deal with these? What gets stripped out of them?

At present, this is a bare beginning and I am going to try and source a slightly betetr spec'd machine (Desktop, I've seen a number of old P3s in our Labs that are to be discarded. Even spotted an AMD or two.) but I would like to know what you guys think with regards to suitable WINDOWS version and what sort of slot-numbers it could run etc.

Thanks,

D Smile

I use XP my self, striped just meen no extra programs, remove all windows unneeded extras, stuf like that.

Running it on that Laptop will be difficult because of its age but if you run a 12 slot 33 tick on a local network you should be ok.

Sorry man, I don't see you being able to hold many slots on a server with 600MHz and under 512 RAM...

Please do not PM me for server related help

I know, I'm just intrigued to see if it would work to give this system some use lol. If it works (regardless of playability), then I'll be happy. It's more of a "see if it works" project than a move to make it a gameserver. I mean, if it works and is playable then happy days but if I need more juice then I'll have to speak to one of my Lecturers about a certain bulk of old PCs I've spotted...

Your prospect of getting 12 players will do for CSS at 33 tickrate if you don't use any bots.
You will have to accept that sometimes it might lock up a bit and map loading etc. will be a pain
