Best Combination of Servers
#1
Hi guys,

Last time I posted here, I was curious about how to set affinity, and how it should be done.

I never really replied back as I forgot my username and password. Toungue

I have a server, with dual Quad-core CPU's (Xeon 5420's), and I'm running Server 2003. I currently use TCAdmin.

I have been allotted 8 IP addresses.

Ideally, how many servers could I run? At the present moment, I have 4 CSS servers, 32 slot, 100 tick one on each core, and 3 TF2 servers (at default 66 tick) one on each core. And another core dedicated for a 50 player COD4 server.

If I drop the tickrates to 66 for all, could I put up another server on each core? I was told that this could do at least 200 players per CPU.

How would you set this up?

Let me know!

For CSS it will hold about 50 slots per core, that's 400 total so yes 200 per CPU. This is calculated at 100 tick CSS slots. You wil however stress your CPU above 80% with that much players, which is NOT advised.

You can aswell lower the 4 CSS servers you have to 66 tick because I'm pretty sure they won't hold 100 tick at about 20 players+

Hi Droc,

So, IF I drop it to 66 tick @ 32 players, I can ideally put another server on each core, for a total of 8x 66 Tick 32 player servers on one whole CPU.

I did a test by just putting it on one core, and it seems to run fine.

Can the same be done for TF2 as well?

I don't think you will be able to double the amount per core, but there certainly is some more room when you drop the tick to 66.

TF2 is also a little more heavy, really best thing is to try and host it and then see where the CPU usage goes.

Yeah it's best to test and see what works and does not work. Smile
I have a 24 slot server running 100 tick and it holds. It's running on a dual quad core e5440. I myself would not put much more then what you have on there. One 32 slot tf2 server should be all you really want on one core. Test and let us know what you get from it Smile

Hey guys,

Thanks for the replies.

I think i'll definitely have to leave it as-is.

The average CPU usage for the CSS server, at 100 tick, and 32 players is about 50 percent. It's not even full either...about 24 players.

For TF2, and 32 players, at 66 tick, it's about 60 percent usage. I guess I'll have to definitely leave it then.
