Custom maps missing
#1
Sad
I have installed the Souce Dedicated Server through Steam (Tools >> Source D...). Is this the same server as I would get if I manually installed (http://planethalflife.gamespy.com/View.php?view=HL2Guides.Detail&id=4&game=3#installation)?

I'm guessing manually installing makes it easier to mod the server?

Anyway my main question is, how do I use custom maps on the server?

My custom maps folder 'maps', maplist.txt and mapcycle.txt are in:

C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\pc0019\counter-strike source\cstrike

The 'maps' folder contains .bsp files.

I added all the custom maps to both txt files (the filename, not including .bsp), but the server GUI can only see original maps.

Actually if I delete maps off both txt files, nothing changed in the server GUI (after a restart)... I can't find any other maplist.txt or mapcycle.txt files on my PC though.

I would appreciate any advice Big Grin

Hmm I manged to get my custom maps working, apparently the server is installed at:

C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\pc0019\source dedicated server\cstrike

I copied the txt files and maps folder there and it all worked fine Big Grin

Will custom textures/etc be downloaded to all clients (if sv_allowdownload = 1)?

And where would I put a configuration file, ie server.cfg?
'source dedicated server\platform\config\server.vdf has some config, but in a different format to the server.cfg entries I have seen online.

My first question still stands.

The steam dedicated server is NOT the same program as the Source Dedicated Server.
The final product is kindof the same (they both do the same job), just that the steam one has every disadvantage possibly to be imagined Smile

One of these disadvantages you already ran into, which is that it doesn't have dedicated files or a separate directory.

So they are essentially similar, but not the same ... , I have a similar problem, i.e. cannot get custom maps to work with srcds, which I am trying to do, as being able to save a substantial amout of diskspace, this way.

So if srcds is limited in it's abilities, is there a way of reducing the HDD footprint of my normal standard Counter-Strike Source installation, and still being able to run a dedicated server, running in addition to the normal maps, custom maps and CSSDM, GunGame and Zombie mods, for my kids here at home?

Thanks, Drocona. I tried installing the standalone server:
http://supportwiki.steampowered.com/wiki/Guide:_Setting_up_a_Standalone_Dedicated_Server
http://planethalflife.gamespy.com/View.php?view=HL2Guides.Detail&id=4&game=3#installation
http://www.trap17.com/index.php/how-make-own-counter-strike-source-dedicated-server_t58002.html

Using those 3. When I ran the updater (double clicked on HldsUpdateTool.exe) it took a long time to update, but eventually did. Then I ran:

C:\SRCDS> hldsupdatetool -command update -game "Counter-Strike Source" -dir C:\SRCDS

'Checking bootstrapper installation...
Updating installation'

At which point it hangs... I left it for about 2 hours last night and it didn't do anything. C:\SRCDS remains unchanged. I have plenty of disk space, and I'm using Vista Home Prem. Is the server not fully compatable with Vista? Apparently Hammer and Steam Friends list arn't, if the amount of crashes I get are any indication... I'm not currently using any firewall/anti-virus apart from Windows 'Defender'.

I tried replacing '"Counter-Strike Source"' with 'cstrike' as I have seen on a few sites, but this didn't work either.

This probably won't work russell_tiedt but for the Steam-installed server, I added the map names (filename minus extension) to mapcycle.txt, created an identicle file maplist.txt, not sure if thats needed, then copied all my .bsp maps to \maps in the same directory as mapcycle.txt (C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\pc0019\source dedicated server\cstrike), then my custom maps show up on the server.

Forgot to say, now the Steam installed server doesn't show up online... It worked yesterday before I tried installing the alternate server for one person, but it doesn't now (different person but I doubt it would make a difference as they can connect to other servers) :x

There are known to be loads of problems with Vista, we don't advise anyone running a server on Vista OS'.
However, everything SHOULD be able to work anyhow, someone has posted a tutorial on Vista installation in our tutorials section on these forums. Maybe following that can fix it.

Replacing the Counter-Strike Source with cstrike will install the HLDS cs 1.6 instead of the SRCDS CS:S.

The not showing up issue is either related to ports being blocked or a router, can be many things, maybe an IP change etc.

Bugger. Well I got the Steam server working anyway - just changed the port from 27015 to 27016. That worked... then next time I used it... it didn't. so I changed it to 27017 and it worked fine again, even after a restart (of the server).
