Colocation - please explain
#1
Hey everybody,
I've been scanning these forums heavily since putting up a srcds server on ubuntu and have come across some great posts, thanks to the contributers. I have some very general questions that are unclear to me that I hope some of you can help out.

For the sake of discussion, lets say I want to put up 5 TF2 servers (or CSS, or something else).

- How can colocation help this out?
- What services do they provide and what are typical pricing ranges?
- Do they provide machines and if so what do you pay for the use of the machines and what is the scaling to better machines?
- From what I've read here you'd need somewhere between 25-100Mbps upload speeds to do 5 servers depending on tickrate and other factors, does that sound about right?
- In a colocation center do you have full admin priviledges to the machines you rent, and what extent does that go.
- As an example that would require a ton of customization: Could I load ubuntu server, throw a webserver hosting ruby on rails tied to apache, and run a bunch of heavily modded srcds servers?
- Finally what should I expect to pay per month (ballpark, lowest figure and highest).

I know this is a LOT of questions, but I've seen a lot of people offering colocation services on this forum as well as a lot of knowledgeable people, so any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

A short answer to the topic title would be:
Colocation is where you provide the server, and the server will be located at a data center, they provide only the bandwidth, not the server.

A more detailed answer will surely be posted soon i'm sure.
