players vs bots cpu usage
#1
ok, i want build css server and need to test, how many slots can i hold. so i know that bot take more cpu than human player. but anybody can tel what is multipyer.

here my tests: lowest cpu is on round end, 8-10% allways
10 bots 20%
20 bots 40%
30bots 80%
34 bots 90% and fps goes down
38 bots nockdown the server after round start with message
DLL_MessageEnd: Refusing to send user message UpdateRadar of 256 bytes to client, user message size limit is 255 bytes

machine: qx6850(3.0ghz/1333fsb without overlock) 4gb(ddr2-800) 100mbps
centos 5.1 init 5
server css nominal 64 slots 66tick pingboost2(not working anymore?)
(additionaly 2x hldsx32slots+hlguard each takes up to 60% and several hldsx12slots each takes some % trifle)

30 bots can play on server normaly, the question is: how many humans will feel fine on the server? May be i should increase CPU frequency?

if you can hold 30 bots, 50 players should be fine.

Also, never overclock a server.

Oddly, I've actually talked to some people who doesn't see a problem with overclocking given that server is kept cool enough. Since this is hard to manage while in a data center, you are probably better off not overclocking.

Please do not PM me for server related help

I ran a stable overclocked server at 25C for 3 years and it burned, of course there's no real way of checking it's a bad CPU or something, luckily I had another same CPU also at the same point, which burned 3 months later.

An I have another (not overclocked)! Which is still running after ~10+ years. Smile

And yes, no good in datacenter at all Big Grin
Yet overclocking also produces some abnormal changes (voltages etc) which give a pretty good chance of providing your system with nice instability problems.

Yea as an avid overclocker myself, i would not overclock a server.

Mainly do to the fact that the server is not in your presence if some issue came up and you had to get into the bois.

Your data center guys might do it for you, but it wont be immediate, and it probably wont be free.

well, what about quad extreem unlocked multipyer: 333 x9 (3G) default but up to x14 (4.66G) ? without any voltage or host frequensy changes?
ps. i have the datacenter with 16C if nessesary

what about it?

still overclocked, still risk of crash, still not gonna be in near you to fix it if it crashes. and it will, just a matter of when and what went wrong

Basically what every GSP/knowledgeable person will tell you is:
Servers need to be reliable, when overclocking the reliability has BIG chances to suffer from it.

+on not overclocking servers.. Every server is different at that. One server may act wonderfully for years overclocked, but another may crash all the time. At ubiquity we have many GSP's that attempt to overclock their servers, and it never works out. Always having to go in and reboot the servers (cuz they crashed) and making different bios changes. We have one GSP that insists on running without swap space even.. heh.

Anyways long story short, don't do it.. (can be) Great for the gaming rig, bad for the server rig.

actualy it's funny problem. i was sure, that my quad extreem will pull full-slot server, but exactly on my server birth - my future one and only concurent came and pradicted, that only his overclocked xeon 3220 (2.4->3.5) can have 64 slots. (realy that server has 60 free slots, update/cmd rates holds on 66, and fall to 50/50 sometimes on fight start. no choke/loss 1-2 sometimes not act)
so, i have long way to fill my slots ant see the truth.

only one wish to developers: make the unpathchable engine, couse i will not have many players therefore. most wanna play for free

I've recently spoken with a dutch server admin who runs one of the biggest servers in Holland, it runs 66 tick.
I think they had a Q6600, running 64 slots, 66 tick. It's using 100% CPU on 1 core, tickrate drops a small bit in the first 30 seconds (to like 40 or so), the rest is all 66.

You really don't need to overclock, there are much better cores than the 6600.
EDIT:
Just read your first post a bit better, according to those specs you shouldn't have a problem running 64 slots at 66 tick if you really want to, it will push the limits of the CPU quite a bit Smile
