As many as the box could handle.

I would say start looking at what the box can support.

I run 5 servers and they use between 0-1mpbs upload

the box isnt the issue, its a q9300 with 4gb ram.

Well, I know when I have two of my servers full 24 man servers. 100tick. I sometimes use upto 7-8mbps ish.
Not sure what size pantho's 5 servers are or what his rates are setup as.
Off what I am getting with my servers I would say a good 100 slots maybe?

The tickrate doesn't tend to affect the internet speed, it's more of a CPU-focused option.

Nah Tickrate definitlely affects the bandwidth usage.

Touché, I just read up on how the tickrate works :p

Surely the bandwidth increase would be minimal though?

Bandwidth increases more than CPu sometimes (Depends on what CPU is running)

A 33 tick server 1 slot can use 3KB/s in the small servers
a 100 tick server with 20 slots will run well above 20KB/s per slot, sometimes even spike to ~27KB/s. which is almost 10x the amount of bandwidth of a small 33 tick slot.
