Are you running the SRCDS on the same computer as you play?
With a router that can only forward a very small amount of ports it's not working either most of the time. (for internet)

Well your problem is that you can't run a server on the same computer you play on.
I suggest if you have an old computer around somewhere (with more than 1GHz CPU) run the server on that one, they are fully capable of running ~20 player servers (if you don't set the tickrate too high).

What kind of router do you use? If you are just using srcds for like testing maps and stuff...u can join your own server on the same computer by just changing the launch options for css...just add +clientport XXXXX in your launch options for your game. Use #'s between 27005-27032, not 27020 = used for hltv....27005 is default...so use a number such as 27006 or any other. But if your gonna run your own server and have players join...I'd do what Drocona said. I only run srcds and play on same computer just to test maps, plugins, admin stuff, and other settings.

Unless there is some hacked firmware going around you might be able to add more ports but I wouldn't count on it.

I know you can run the actual program on the same computer, but it will never come even the slightest amount towards the quality of a dedicated server.
If you host and play on the same computer, the computer will focus on the GAME instead of the server, even if you set the server High or Realtime priority. your computer however should be focusing on the SERVER and lag your game instead. But that's impossible in the current setups.

I have actually had fairly good results.
But any way, i checked ports. Everything is how it should be! I even re-did the ports (deleted current forward settings and tried again)
Is this compatible with vista?
I personnaly dont see why it would mess up this bad but!
I have gotten somebody out side of my network to see it buit they couldnt connect! (with the formentioned error)

If the server runs and you can join it, the problem is the router.
