How many slots with this VPS?
#1
I have a virtual private server with Xeon E5310, 1gig RAM (bursts to 2gig) and 30/30mbps.

If I run a single server with tick33, assuming that I have one 1.6 Ghz Xeon core for myself, how many slots would it support?

And what would you suggest that I should upgrade if I want to run 50 slots?

I doubt there are only 2 people on that server, you'll probably get WAY less CPU power. VPS are not suitable for running servers at all, sometimes it can work but on average you lack way too much CPU power. VPS are for webhosting applications, not for programs like dedicated gameservers etc.

You probably won't get 50 slots on that, if you want to you'll be looking at some dual core AMD dedicated server at least.

I see, but if I go looking for a dedicated server then, what would the minimum Intel Core-architecture CPU frequency need to be for a smooth 50-player gameplay?

And does anyone know when we will get a SrcDS with multi-core support?

At least an E6300.

I don't think there will ever be multi core support.

Hmm, I found out a bit ago that the place I was renting my "dedicated server" from turned out to be running on a VPS, and I was wondering why I would get bad lag spikes and such. Sad SOB they robbed me! I was so pissed off to find this out I had to go buy my own server. Makes me mad how companys get away with this.

I think i found a pretty good server now for a very reasonable price:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+ (10% better than E6300 according to cpubenchmark.net)
2Gigs of DDR2
2x400gb SATA II
Network connection from Nurnberg:
# 20 GBit/s Noris Network
# 10 GBit/s Deutsche Telekom
# 10 GBit/s LambdaNet
# 10 GBit/s DE-CIX
# 10 GBit/s Tiscali
# 1 GBit/s KPN EuroRings
# 1 GBit/s N-IX

Only thing is that if I exceed 1000GB monthly limit I will be limited to 10mbps, but shouldn't that be just about enough for 50-man CSS on tick 33?

You can run 50x 100 tick on 10mbps, so that's not a problem at all Smile

Is there any real point in running tick 100 though?

and why does everyone either run tick 33, 66 or 100, can't one use like tick 50?

You can use any amount of tickrate you like to, I have no idea why everyone uses 33, 66, 100. Only thing I can come up with is that 33 is standard, double quality is 66, triple quality is 99, but max quality is 100 so they use 100 I guess.

Anyway, I run servers at 50 and 75 mostly instead of 66 and 100 so yeah you can use anything you feel comfortable with.
There is absolutely NO point running 100tickrate over the internet (not even for match servers, but because some morons decided that your matchserver HAS to run 100 tick they kinda set the worst trend ever). There is a negligible difference between 66 and 100 tick in performance over the internet, 100tick only wastes 3x as much resources on the computer and bandwidth... for nothing....

LAN parties are something different, you can really notice 100tick runs way better than 66 there, that was also the main intention of 100 tickrate.

We use 100 tickrate slots as a measurement like meters and miles in the SRCDS world, since it wastes the most resources it defines the maximum you can ever run on a server for example.

Alright thanks, I guess I will run tick 50 then to get a bit better performance than default.
