Counter Strike Source Quad Core question
#1
Hi,

I've just bought a New Dedicated server to host CSS.

The game seems to work fine then will start to lag some time after. Stuttering.
Once the game is restarted it is fine again for a while.

Server tick: 66
Server.cfg info:
fps_max 300
sv_maxrate 20000
sv_minrate 2500
sv_minupdaterate 66
sv_maxupdaterate 66

Server Specs:
Processors: Quad Core Xeon X3210
Memory: 2GB RAM
OS: Windows 2003 Server Standard (SP2)

Load is never above 3% across all 4 cores.

Anyone any ideas if there is anything I need to do to the server with regards to quad core?

Have you set affinities?

open the taskmanager (cntrl+alt+del)
right click srcds.exe and click "Affinity..."
Then select 1 core.

Try to equally balance your servers over the cores.

OK - well I have tried TCAdmin previously and selected all 4 cores. Is this incorrect?

run a server on 1 core only, not all 4

Hi,

Hows that work?
running across all 4 cores is not better than just 1?

Since the SRCDS is not multithreaded it can only run at 1 core at the time, if windows starts loadbalancing it will keep switching cores, resulting in performance drops.

Am I right in thinking if you use Serverchecker it does this for you? You don't have to worry about the affinity....I'm not sure though.

Its this program you run and it basically monitors the servers, restarts them if they crash and you can set it to restart your server too.

To stop the lag between the initial and final rounds use -heapsize in the command line, the amount of memory you can change according to the number of slots you have on your server.

10 .. 12 Slots => 256MB = 262144
12 .. 16 Slots => 384MB = 393216
16 .. 24 Slots => 512MB = 524288
24 .. 32 Slots => 1024MB = 1048576
32 .. 40 Slots => 2048MB = 2097152

Do not forget to use the Srcdsfpsboost.exe

I don't recommend using -heapsize, it mostly brings more problems when you enable it.
I'm not even sure if it's still there at all?

Serverchecker doesn't support affinity. And the feature wont be added, the current release isn't under development.

how long does it take for the lag to kick in? and does the map change between the servers starts and when the lag starts to occur?
