did you look in the directory that you specified during the update command?
if you did and it's not there, then I would assume that the update failed and suggest trying again.

There were no errors during the install, i have placed everything in the /home/srcds_l/ folder.
Im lost as I have installed servers from scratch before without these sort of problems!

so whats in that directory?
installrecord.blob?
if that is there and the srcds_run isn't, I'd suggest deleting the installrecord.blob, and running the update command again.

Oh I see. Your problem is that you didn't download Counter-Strike Source, but rather just Counter-Strike (as in 1.6).
Either delete all of that with the exception of steam or if you want to run a 1.6 server, then keep it and make a new directory.
Then run steam again, this time make sure that when you do the -game, you put "Counter-Strike Source"

I ran the command again and it said that it could not go in the same directory so I changed the directory and it is now downloading.
I take it this will be all the files for the Source dedicated server.
Thanks again!

then it worked, hl2 is the hl2 engine directory which is what source uses.
