Crazy Q&A Idea
#1
I have an interesting idea that I want to experiment with. There are a lot of details about Linux, and SRCDS in general that I know nothing about, and I'm sure others are curious as well. Basically I want to do this: Each post should contain an answer and question. The poster should answer the question of the previous poster, and then ask his own question to be answer later by another poster. These Q&A should be rather simple and easy to answer, not a lot of complicated gibberish such as updating kernel, or high-level technical jargon. It should be "Trivial"

I'll Start

Q: What is the significance of the + or - signs in front of the commands when running the srcds_run script, what do they mean?

A: Minus commands are passed straight to the server and are for the core feature set, e.g Max Players and Tickrate. Plus command are passed straight to the server console for non-core functions, such as map or fps_max

Thats how I understand it anyway

Q: Is there any point to having a high server FPS? If the server FPS is just the number of times per second the server checks for I/O, surely it's not beneficial to have it above the tickrate, the number of times per second with which the world is updated, since the server will only have new I/O to process or output upon every tick?

A:
Basically higher FPS means more precision on the server side, yes if you run 100tick, 100 FPS should be enough, but not every process runs at the exact same pace as the CPU ticks.
If you have 100FPS it can process things 100 times per second, when you put it to 500 it can do 500 in a second, that's 5 times more than the 100 resulting in more exact calculations, making the server very stable.

However if you go too high with the FPS (800+) The quality will drop, somehow there's something going wrong, there will be huge spikes ingame and a lot of crashes. (For the HLDS it 1000FPS meant real fast gameplay, it was like 2x faster that a normal server, this does NOT work on SRCDS')
