Hi all,
we are looking to colocate our server (q6600, 4GB, 250GB HDD) and we are looking to run quite a few servers off this. Anyway, we have been looking at companies that provide this service, some offereing 3000GB a month and some (which is where i am confused) offering 1Mbit on the 95th percentile.
Now, i think i get how all the billing works, what i am struggling with is, will a 1Mbit bandwidth on the 95th percentile thing be pretty much the same as a 3000GB bandwidth deal (apart from billing if over this). The interent connection is on a 100mbit so there isnt an issue with the speed, just the amount.
Cheers

um no 1Mb at 95th is about 330G of transfer NOT 3000G, 10Mb at 95th is just about 3300G of transfer (max but with overhead and stuff you're prob looking at 3000G). your state that your port speed is 100Mb, meaning you can burst to 100Mb, which is fine but can obviously lead to overages if you average more than 1Mb of transfer (which is easily done with a game server) for your billing period.
resellers sell bandwidth in one of 2 ways (very general) via 95th percentile billing and total amount transferred (usually both ways so add the in+out of your port to get the total amount). they can sell 95th because people that colo usually know how much bandwidth they use and purchase that amount. they can also sell set bandwidth ie your 3000G, because they also know that a vast majority of users will never use that full amount thus allowing them to oversell the bandwidth they buy from their provider. however if every customer that bought the 3000G plan were to use the entire 3000G then the colo would probably have to pay overages to their network provider. that's how they make $$$ off of the set bandwidth plans. it's similar to what webhosts do when they offer you 100G storage and 250G transfer a month, they know that most people will never use either to the max.
gameservers are just a small portion of the colo environment so i would say that you'd be better off getting the 3000G plan if you're going to game.

hi again...
(Q6600 @ 2.4Ghz
4GB mem
250gb hdd
100mbit connection
3000GB bandwidth allowance)
Just one more question.. now i've read alot on the forums about srcds and although i think from what i have read that you can only run one instance of it per core i just wanted to make sure i was right..
so .. by the spec above.. how many instances of srcds can i run.. only 4?
if it is only 4, could i run other game servers side by side, such as UT3 or CoD4?
could i use OpenVZ (or similar) to create virtual machines and run more instance that way or not.
basically i wanna try and get the most out of this as possible.
Thanks in advance for your help guys

You can run as many servers per core as you want.

Like jameshaigh said, you can run as many as you like.
from 5x 10 slots to 1x 50 slots per core.
You can also run other gameservers next to it, no problem.

I would say that server could get 190ish 100 tickrate CSS slots.
