Basically I am getting a Xeon dedicated server setup this week as a free upgrade for the downtime we have had and what not. On my current E6550 I was going to be host my 2 Public TF2 20 Slot servers, Our 16 slot match server, and 2 other 16 slot match servers. Basically the 2 Public servers would be the only servers really ever used. The others might get use 1-2 days a week.
With the Xeon I am rather curious as to what kind of mileage I am looking at for TF2 servers. I am not really looking to be a GPU as of now, I am more interested in breaking even by renting a few of these match servers out.
The other clans want 20 Slot FPS Boosted (600). One of the clans currently pays 68$ a month for a Private server 20 slot FPS Boosted (600) and the other is getting a 20 Slot for 26$ (max_FPS 128) from myinternetservices.com. I am basically wondering how pricing is usually determined between Public and Private slots, and so on. As much information as possible on how people decide how much to charge based on FPS boosting, etc would be a huge help.
I don't want to rip them off, but I don't want to give them godly servers for cheap either.
Other Questions -
1) max_FPS at 600 is pretty smooth and should be charged extra for correct?
2) A general public 66 tick server shouldnt be offered under max_FPS 300 correct?
3) How much CPU usage does an empty server use (I never checked). I am just curious if selling private slots is a great way for these GSPs to make money as they are making a fair amount on servers that are passworded, thus very rarely used.
4) Does 2.50 for max_fps 600 server slot TF2 sound like a fair price?

5) What is the max CPU usage you want a server to run at?

Well, you also need a control pannel and many other things if you want to sell them for people.
Myself I would say 80% is the max you ever want your cpu hitting. so 60-70% cpu usage maybe.
I am not sure about the fps max, I have not tested this out too much. My one server is always around 100fps and seems to run great for everyone.
2.50 for a slot, if you can get people to pay that you can't go wrong, some companys are only charging 1.50 per slot though.

From what I have seen, most of the companies charging 1.50 a slot are either a) running a very low max_fps b) have pretty bad service c) over crowd the servers.
We initially went with myinternetservices.com for 1.75 a slot, getting 128 fps server. It was extremely choppy, after the first month experienced a lot of down time, waited hours, sometimes days for them to update the game server, etc.

If you can give them good and fast customer service, the extra money is ALWAYS worth it.
Also stuff like hlstatsx can also increase the price of the server.

Would offering Hlstatsx (Lart's version) cause any kind of legal problems from HlstatsX? I was actually curious about that with us running it and all.

2.00 bucks for a 33 tickrate server (per slot) is reasonable. Those hosting companies that have 1$ SLOTS OMG!@!@!@!@ Are complete utter bullsh*t. I myself have been looking into a GSP and through research found that there is no possible way to break even that way unless your servers suck and you overload. Just provide quality servers and support. Make sure you have good bandwidth providors, must be tier 1!
Btw before you invest in it, make sure you know SRCDS like the back of your hand.
edit: Also about the CPU usage, best thing to do is keep it below 80%

All my servers run at 512 FPS standard, companies asking more money for boosted servers are simply ripping you off since it only takes 1 shitty program to run at 512 and it won't take any more CPU, bandwidth or whatever at all.
However what you can do is set the price nice on for example a 20 slots server guaranteeing the quality because it's running 512 FPS (harder to drop below 66FPS if you are running 66 tick servers)

Wait are you serious Drocona? More FPS doesnt require more CPU?

I second this question...if it doesn't take more CPU then why doesn't every provider just offer it at higher?

It's just a money maker, in over 3 years I've always been running the FPS boost and I've NEVER EVER seen it increase CPU usage by 1%!
That's why I always hate all those companies that increase the price for what they call a "boosted" server, there's nothing really boosted, it's just an internal timer limit set to a higher amount resulting in a higher FPS. It's a simple "Click-Run-Done" which doesn't cost them any money. Also their servers ARE all running the srcdsfpsboost.exe anyway else how would they be able to rent them out?
They set up a server on one of their boxes, the box is capable of 512FPS at least cause it has srcdsfpsboost running, now when someone orders a server 20slots they set it up with an fps_max 100 (because they didn't pay for "boosted)
next client wants a "boosted" server also 20 slots, that gets set up at the same box but with fps_max 600.
It's the exact same server, uses same resources etc etc. but they charge you for having 1 bloody rate set to a higher amount
I can get real mad about people doing such things, it's just unfair. There have been companies that came to me, "don't say that, that's bullshit", all I say to them "Stop being a jerk an stop lying to your clients, I tell people the truth, I don't like people 'stealing' money from people in such a low way"

To CrimsonGT: we can speculate on your mileage all day. You have missed a VITAL piece of information, WHAT XEON ARE YOU GETTING?! Model, stepping, give us SOMETHING!
Regarding fps boosting, IT DOES affect CPU usage, dramatically. Use no boosting on all 6 of our servers, CPU sits around 50-60% (all serv's full)... Fireup fpsboost, CPU rockets to 85-90%.

Usage < 100%
100% = lag/excessive choke/loss.

FPS boosting DOES use a LOT more CPU, at least for TF2. When I ping-boost my TF2 server, my server's CPU maxes out when the server is full.
