Aus server Bandwidth
#1
Hey everyone,
It is my first time posting on this site so be nice Toungue
i was looking at setting up a server which has 200 gb of bandwidth in/out
and was hoping if someone could tell me
1. how much bandwidth a 66 tic server would use
2. how many servers do you think i could run without going over
3. does the gui version of srcds use more bandwidth then the console
4. is their anyway on cutting back how much bandwidth your server uses and if so how?

thank you to whoever is willing to help me, your help would be very appreciated

1) http://forums.srcds.com/viewtopic/5735 Read...search feature is nice on this forum.
2) Not a clue, depends on what game, etc.
3) Uh, I don't think having a GUI affects bandwidth in the least. Bandwidth is the actual data that is being sent and recieved, AKA Network traffic. A graphical user interface in relation to bandwidth usage is like Does cookie monster affect Pamela Anderson's professional career? Console is usually the way to go for the simple reason you have much more control, its less system resources, etc.
4) Best way to cut back on bandwidth is disable any kind of custom downloads (do not allow players to download maps from your server, if you must, use a sv_downloadurl. What you set your server rates to is another biggie. Theres other small ways to save some bandwidth, but once again search feature works well.

The GUI version wastes more resources on your computer (Possessor, Ram) but not bandwidth.

There are things you can add to your server.cfg that will help limit bandwidth. However I don't know much about setting those since my server is on a FAT line and bandwidth isn't a problem Shy

Please do not PM me for server related help

Setting bandwidth limitations will directly affect performance

Does maxrate and minrate and all those things affect bandwidth. if so how and how can i reduce them to make it use less bandwidth a month. is their a possible way of having a server that has 6kb/s usage. if so how can i make it run like that without affecting the bandwidth too much. if i have a server which is a 66 tic server and people have an cl_cmdrate of 101 does that use more bandwidth (if the server doesnt force rates).
thanks again for the help Toungue

If your having bandwidth problems, and you can't upgrade, make the server 33 tick. I don't think cl_cmdrate matters as much as rate does. Rate is what actually sets the max bandwidth if I remember correctly.

hmm nar i just dont wanna use any more bandwidth then i have too!
so i wanna make it as efficient as possible, even if it can save only 10 gb its worth it when im only getting 200gb a month
btw how many could i safely run with 200gb of bandwidth a month and not ave it go over.
and does cs 1.6 use less or more bandwidth then source. and what about tf2?
can you use srcds to run cod4? and how much bnadwidth does it use?

As far as I know the game doesn't really matter so much from steam to steam game as much as tickrate and a few other things do. The biggest difference will be the CPU usage. CS 1.6 uses relatively little CPU compared to TF2.

A lot of these questions you are asking though you can either use the search feature, or just experiment (my best recommendation as that is what we are doing now). Just push it to its limit and run a bandwidth monitoring tool.

I know a 66 tick TF2 server 24 slot full for an entire month uses around 550gb of bandwidth.

yer man i ave been serching a lot but their isnt many parts that tell you how to cut back on bandwidth Toungue so by forcing rates (update and cmdrate) like 66 will make the bandwidth usage smaller?
does anyone no how to host a cod4 server?

I would imagine so but as far as proof I have no idea. cmdrate and updaterate as far as I know are how often the client sends updates on its position to the server and how often the other players positions are updated (so people don't feel that hitbox lag type thing). Rates are the minimum and maximum bandwidth a player can use, although minimum doesn't really matter.

Your best bet is get the servers up, and measure the bandwidth. If it looks like they are going to exceed or come close on your bandwidth limitations, increase your bandwidth or maybe then start looking at all the possible ways to cut down on a bit of bandwidth.

Also make sure you aren't running anything off of the same bandwidth such as file downloads, etc. I just checked my cpanel for my website and I have used 19/20gb of bandwidth this month from the sv_downloadurl so popular downloads can add some hefty bandwidth usage as well.

*edit*

From what I found on the web, you must purchase the CoD4 game to have access to running a game server for it.

man thanks a heaps for all the help you ave been giving me.... this is the first forum where i havent been told a noob and that somebody has posted the excat same thing already in Toungue

i have already actually run a few servers and i used about 300 gb of bandwidth on about 4 x 12 slot servers, i never had a sv_download url and was running maps like de_season and surf_greatriver (which people ave to dl a lot) a lot, so maybe i used so much because of all of the downloading.
also i remeber seeing it someone on this site but have search and cant find it. Sad it had like how much cpu usage and ram each server slot used.
it was along the lines of 20 mb of ram and 50 ghz cpu usage is this correct?
