Processor Performance
#1
Question
Just wondering if anyone has any experience running tf2 and/or css on any of these different processors and can tell me how many slots/servers they managed to get.
  • AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+
  • AMD X4 Phenom 9500 Quad Core
  • Intel Core 2 Duo E6850
  • Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
  • Intel Xeon Quad Core X3210
  • Intel Xeon Quad Core E5310

I heard that there are some performance problems with running srcds on intel core 2 processors, is amd the way to go?
Thanks.

TF2 uses a LOT more processor power then CS:S
All I know is that I have a 3.0 GHz P4 and can't really run more then one 24-slot server nicely.
It's about 60% or higher when full. If we run another server, both full would probably max out the server and create lag.

Please do not PM me for server related help

2.00 GHZ per core generally means 40ish slots 100 tickrate, only generally though. But TF2 uses way more reasources and can only run 66 tick max. Make sure to put that into consideration. Then im not sure what architechture those Xeon's are but lots of Xeons have been having problems so be careful.

This is on the "new" CORE 2 based CPU's, NOT older P4's
To give an indication, a P4 2,8GHz will hold 40 100 tick with some luck and high CPU usage.

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600

Thats the best processor for running a Game Server, you'll get more slots then you think Smile

Just say no to the AMD Athlon 64 5200+. I rented a dedicated box for TF2 servers around late December. For the first couple weeks we were running 2 20 slot public servers, and 2 private match servers on it. It wasn't amazingly fast, but it was okay. For some reason we are just getting nasty CPU usage and lag spikes though. This processor definitely is not strong enough unless you want like a single 20 slot server ran on it. We are switching to Intel C2D E6550 tommorow as I believe this should run it much better.
