LAN srcds - slow map download?
#1
I've got a srcds running on windows XP. It is intended for a LAN party only. It runs fine but map downloads are very slow (if a client connects but does not have the current map). For example, it might take a couple of minutes to download an 8MB map, even though both PCs are 2GHz CPU on a 100Mb LAN.

I've read through the forums and heaps of server.cfg files but nothing seems to help. Here are (what I think are) the relevant server.cfg settings:
// server cvars
sv_allowupload 1
sv_allowdownload 1
sv_timeout 65
// bandwidth rates/settings
sv_minrate 0
sv_maxrate 0
decalfrequency 10
sv_maxupdaterate 100
sv_minupdaterate 20
// operation
sv_lan 1
sv_region 5

Is there some other setting I should use? I've tried starting srcds.exe and running in GUI mode, and also tried it using the "-console" option but neither work. I know the server.cfg is being executed, because the server name in my server.cfg appears when clients search for or join the server.

Can anyone please help!

Thanks

well best thing to do is to download and install an FTP program (like bulletproof FTP Server) then use the sv_downloadurl variable to point to the file on the FTP its very easy to do and your downloads will almost be 80MBps on a network

Edited because I re-read Drocona's suggestion properly ;-)

Is there a thread that shows how to do this (eg. what URL do I use)? For example, if my server is called "foo" and has an IP of w.x.y.z on the LAN, and my srcds.exe lives in "d:\srcds", then what download URL do I use? Are there any special settings required for bulletproof FTP server?

Thanks,
Ben

no you dont need any special settings

in Bulletproof FTP just create an user account WITHOUT a password so you dont have to login, add the directory to the account pointing to your dedicated server cstrike folder and your done! (so the path would be D:\srcds\cstrike

how to do the URL:

sv_downloadurl ftp://account@yourip/

that should fix it Cool

if you cant fix it contact me at Matts_bos@hotmail.com (also MSN adress) and i'll get you through with screenshots etcetera

OK, thanks heaps. Do the clients need an FTP client, or is it built into counter-strike source and hl2mp?

You need to upgrade your internet package because your speed is very slow. You must take now the fiber optics internet package as bestessays showed that the fiber has lesser pings in the line during the use of the internet.
