SRCDS Using 2 Computers and Windows ICS?
#1
Question
Alright, so I'm trying to set up a little dedicated server on my old pc for my college hall. (I used the HLDS update tool to download the Source DS so I don't have to use the tools in Steam.)

The problem is that I can only have one computer connected to the internet at a time (without paying for an extra network ID).

So I have my main computer (running Vista Enterprise) connected to the wall. From there, I'm using a crossover cable and ICS from this computer's second ethernet port to connect my other computer (let's just call it the server, running XP Home).

The problem is that when I enable ICS, my main computer is automatically assigned the IP 192.168.0.1 to the server. The server acquires it's address from my main computer's private IP range. Therefore, whenever I host a dedicated server, the IP is private and the server can't be seen by other computers on my network. (Which yes, I am sure we are networked together.)

Is there anyway I can make this server accessible to the other residents?

I know that this is a very vague description, but I don't know what details to include right now. Just ask if you want to know anything else.

Thanks in advance for any advice,
Steve

Buy a router and attach that to the wall in your dorm.

Set it up so that the router's external IP is the one you've been assigned by your college. Disable DHCP.

Now attach both computers to the router. They'll have IP's such as 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.3, but that doesn't matter. Go into your router's admin area and forward all ports from 27015-27030 (there may be more) TCP AND UDP from the server computer.

Now it will look like you only have one PC attached, but the wonder of NAT will allow you to have unlimited.

But this is probably against the rules of your college, so be careful. Do it secretly or not at all.

Don't buy a router, that guy has almost the perfect setup, you shouldn't ruin that!

Only thing you have to do is put the server in the wall and put your normal PC behind it with ICS (so they switch places basically)
That fixes all your problems (I have that same setup here at my house and it works perfect)

Ah I didn't think of that. I've never used ICS before.

Thanks all for the prompt response.

I actually ended up solving this problem the next morning (my RA had an extra switch).

So I was just able to plug both machines into the switch.

I forgot to mention originally that I was trying to solve this problem without buying anything (as I spliced my own crossover cable :-D). Also, there is a rule against routers here? (I'm not sure about the specifics or anything)

Also, Drocona, I would have tried that, but again (as I failed to mention) I was trying not to buy anything new. And with my current setup, the machines couldn't be swapped. The second ethernet port is located onboard on my main pc, so I couldn't swap that out. And the machines are VERY different.

The server I'm trying to use is an old eMachines 2.3GHz Celeron and 1 GB of RAM (plus onboard graphics :-D). As opposed to my main machine which is running an Athlon 64 X2 6000+ and 2 8600 GT's. Lol.

But again, thank you again for your very quick responses. I'm trying to get into server hosting again, since now I have a hall of players who would play.

I'm sure you'll be hearing from me again.

Thanks,
Steve
