TF2 Server Tickrate, Rates, etc?
#1
I rented a dedicated box, and currently we are running 2 20 slot public servers and a 16 slot match server on it. So usually there is no more than 40 people on it.

We rebuilt the linux kernel and the match servers running at +max_fps 600 and it runs silky smooth. FPS stays right at about 500 even.

We are trying to get the public servers set to optimal conditions as well. The other guy maintaining the servers with me set both of them to +max_fps 500 but I read that anything below 500 will register as 256 or whatever. I am wondering if it would take up too much to run two 20 slot public servers at fps_max 600. I am assuming just putting them both at 300 each should be fine.

He also mentioned that rebuilding the kernel would allow us to run a true 100 tick TF2 server. I am almost positive nothing we can do will allow us to run at 100 tick. Currently he has -tickrate 100 set in all the servers which I don't think is doing anything. Should I set this back to 66 for all of the servers?

Last question I am trying to figure out is how do I figure out what the max/min rates, cmdrates, and updaterates should be for my servers. I had them all set at sv_minrate 10000 sv_maxrate 25000 sv_mincmdrate 33 sv_maxcmdrate 66 sv_minupdaterate 33 sv_maxupdaterate 66 but am just curious if I should change these?

I appreciate any help!

As of what I've heard, TF2 doesn't run well at 100 Tick.
Just run it at 66 Tick.

Yeah, thats what I figured. I went ahead and changed them all back to 66 tick, I keep telling him TF2 caps at 66 tick but he doesn't listen lol.

Anyways, if I can get help with the other questions that would be great!

Thanks so much guys

If you want 512 FPS put in something higher like fps_max 600 or 700. Change the update rates to whatever your tickrate is.

Also setting high FPS will not influence resource usage in any way, there's no point limiting a normal server to 300 fps and set another server to 700 because it's a match server.

Set every server to run at 500-700 FPS and it will be superb quality, I run 7 servers all at 512 FPS mixed 75 and 100 tickrate for CSS.

Like the rest said, TF2 is capped at 66 tick, running 100 is simply wasting system resources (what I heard, haven't confirmed myself about the resource usage)

If that is the case why do servers even run at lower? I set all my servers back to 66 tick, but right now the 2 public servers are running at 300 max_fps and the match servers set to 600. If that is the case though I will just put them all at 600

Lower can be stable. Not as powerful resources available means they have to put it at a lower FPS to give them stable results.

yeah when I had all of them set to 600 the two 20 slots seemed to bounce around a lot. Like would be at 500 then drop to 417 then up again and so on.

Yeah. Just matters if it is stable or not.
