Some IP problems..
#16
A lot of times company's call the routers modems (to make it easy for their clients), however when the user starts to go a little advanced like making servers and basic networking they get confused because people like us tell them it's not a modem but a router Smile

Things you have to do:

Go to the http://<ipaddres-of-the-routerhere> (you can find this one in start=>run=>cmd and type "ipconfig", then the IP that stands behind "Default Gateway:" is the one from the router.)
forward the ports to <ip-of-your-pc-here>

and it should work.

That's the problem. It's not a router, its a modem, and It wont let me connect.

Im positive that its a modem, because on routers it has the one input where you have your internet, then usually 4 more slots that are outputs to other comps. Our modem just has 1 spot on it, and thats the one going to my computer.

I don't have wireless. I don't have the adapter for it. My parents have wireless.

I just looked at how it was setup and this is what it is...

We get our internet from the cable modem

The modem is then connected to one of those Apple wireless adapter things.

Then an ethernet cable is run from that up to my comp.

So that adapter is messing with meh?

Would it fix my problem if I got a wireless network adapter for my comp?

it might, but if it did wirless is slow.

I would talk your parents into a regular wireless router and then hardwire yourself to that.

Yeah just get a good router, 50-100 bucks. Wireless is horrible unless you want to get Wireless N which defeats the purpose of being cheap.

I think Im just going to get this. (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833127167) My comp is very close to the wireless "thing".

Everyone gave it awesome reviews saying the speed and the reception is exceptional. It costs 70 dollars and its going to work easier then having to rearrange all the networks. After all my parents may be a bit skeptical Wink

Dlink is baaaaad for SRCDS. Just get a router, your parents can still have wireless or whatever and you can be wired.
