Log File Analysis
#1
Currently I look (periodically) at log files from 6 CS:S servers. I have been doing this by hand and am looking for what everyone else uses to analyze their log files. I'm doing it the old fashioned way.

What I do is simple ftp down the files to my local machine, change to that dir in dos and "copy l12*.log december.log". This give me one nice log for December to work with, do my thing, zip it up and ftp it back to the server and delete all the 100's of smaller files.

Keeps the servers all nice and neat. But, what can I use to properly analyze this log file besides a basic find function in note/wordpad?

I need something to parse out anything by steam ID, IP or partial name and want to count map names and load counts. Statistics.

Any ideas?

Don't know if there's anything like it but you could have a PHP script or VB code to do those things for you, but that I'm afraid you'll have to code yourself.

I think there's way more possibilities, this just came into my mind first...

With all the log file analytical applications that are in existence, I'm surprised there is not a couple favored by the CS:S community. Guess they don't care that much about logs and the info contained therein. Frequently I dive into the logs by hand to see, for instance, that player that got banned for cheating, his past habits on the server and any other aliases they may have used, looking for those racist bastard that are very brave when no admins are present, etc.

IMO, there's a gold mine of info in there but I'll have to find an automated way of parsing out what I'm looking for. These files copied together into one file runs between 75meg - 250meg each monthly, times six. Thats a lot of text log!

The only game stats log analyzer I've ever come across is VSP Stats Processor. It supports a lot of source and GoldSRC games along with some other stuff. I've never used it, but it looks like an interesting program and free.

That is a nice find. Installed it on my web server and it was easy to get player stats from files. I recommend this to those that want player stats, however this is not what I'm looking for. I'm looking for something that I can configure to report stuff more for management use and server use stats. Not player performance stats.

Thanks though!@

You might have to code your own then, i've never come across anything that does this. I might be able to code one, would be an interesting project.

Currently looking at TextPipe Pro 7.x. Looks promising so far but have not really dove into it yet. Define filters, drag n' drop log files etc. Did some test runs and it's fast, just gotta figure how to get meaningful info out of the file.
Sad
