Since i'm having problems with all three of my routers, can anyone recommend a good but not very expensive router that works with srds? Thanx.

You should elaborate on what your problems are since it might be an easier fix than replacing the router. Most of the time it's a matter of learning how to forward the ports correctly.

For residential use I've been very pleased with my D-Link router. I've had several failures with Linksys equipment and would not personally recommend them.

D-Link are horrible for routing SRCDS. Best would be to use a switch imo. Otherwise an actiontech MI424WR

Funny, I've had no problems routing anything with my D-Link including SRCDS. A switch isn't going to replace a router in all situations either. In my case if I put a switch after my cable modem I will only get 2 dynamic IP's (this setup will not work for all, especially DSL); not enough to run all the stuff I have. Of course in this case if I was having router issues I could use the switch, put the server on one of the ports and run the other port to a router and run all my other stuff... but I've never had routing issues.

Well all D-link routers i have seen/had sucked for hosting lol. Same for linksys. But who knows? Different hardware/firmware can change everthing. I know Orudie's setup, he has a server and one computert. He could always add a router like you said. I wish i never had routing problems :/

Internet-->modem-->server-->switch-->LAN

no portforwarding problems, no routers, no bullshit, server works out of the box and this setup is safer than any router on the planet

Wait what happens if the server shuts down for some reason?
And I cant do that :/. My wonderful ISP makes it so you have to have a router lol.

If the server shuts down you lose internet, LAN control will be transfered to another computer (automatically), keeping the network intact at all times.

Normally servers don't shut down unless you reboot them lol Big Grin

Routers are less reliable though, of all the routers I've used they all crashed at least 200% more than my server (which is a 7 year old P3 933MHz with 6xxMB ram)

My old router crashed quite a bit but my new router works like a charm. 6xxMB of ram and a P3 lol. What do you host on it?

It has a webserver, FTP, mailserver, MySQL, everything you could possibly need and a 20 slot zombiehorde server for testing purposes (haven't used that in ages) together with almost any mod (Hidden:Source, GE:Source, TF2, Css, HL2DM, and much more)

Anything I want runs on it Big Grin

That does work very well of course, but there are pitfalls for some installations. I had a similar setup at one time using a linux box as the server/router, however I like to "tinker" a lot and that would often involve reboots etc for the server making the rest of my family not very happy. My current setup pretty well allows me to do whatever I like and yet the internet (including wireless stuff) is always available for everyone else.

Well I have another server directly next to my main server as shown in the line above, which is for developing purposes, so the main server never really goes offline because I'm screwing up settings and stuff like that Smile
