Best Option?
#1
Hi there,

Right now I'm running a 32-slot CSSDM server & 12 slot match server (both 66 tick) on this box:

Intel P4 2.8Ghz (no HT)
2GB DDR RAM
2 x 80GB Hard Drives
100mbit Internet Connection

..it's on a Debian 4.0 with the kernel recompiled @ 1000hz. But, it also runs Apache2, mySQL, Postfix (basically a whole web server), and Ventrilo.

When I bought the server I thought it'd handle it, but obviously not. I get small lag spikes when just 24 people are online.

What do you think is the best option out of these:

-- Option 1 --
Keep the dedicated server I have right now but remove Ventrilo and the webserver. Buy a small VPS (or low-end dedicated) to run the websites & Vent on.

-- Option 2 --
Upgrade to a low-end Core 2 Duo (maybe cut down to 1GB/1.5GB of RAM for money reasons) and run everything from that box.

Your help is appreciated Wink

Thanks.

I say get the core 2 duo with 1gig ram, it will do the job fine.
Removing the webserver won't do any good.. won't notice it.

Core2Duo, much better option.

I had an E6600 which is one of the higher end ones, running 4 32man source servers, mysql tracking hlstatsx on all 4 and teamspeak server and it ran fine - no lag.

I wouldnt worry about RAM, 1GB should be fine for srcds, it hits CPU not RAM usage.

Where do you get your Core2Duo Dedicated Servers from? Any reccomendations?

Thanks.

Really depends on where you live I guess. Smile

I buy my own and then co-locate, don't rent full servers.

I live in the UK but rent servers from the USA.

Colocation would be a great option but I can't get the machine over to the US very easily Wink

So you cater for american players?

If it's UK I would recommend killercreation.co.uk they provide me with a dedi, support is excellent.

Yes, I cater for american players Smile

How many players (lets say it's on a CSSDM server) would a 1.86Ghz Core 2 Duo be able to hold?

I'd say around 70-80 slots at 66 tickrate CSSDM slots should work

I've been offered a Dual Xeon 2.0Ghz w/ 1GB RAM.

Possibly 80 CSSDM slots with this machine?

Thanks.

What type of Xeon is it? Clovertown, Woodcrest?

Since receiving the offer I've found that it's the "P4 Style" Xeon with HyperThreading.

Hey Drocona, why can you run less CSSDM servers then just normal servers? Is it because you respawn straight away so it uses more reasources?

Instead of the normal peak at the start of the round, you have it all the time in DM since everyone keeps spawning Smile
