SRCDS Steam group

CentOS anyone?

Having problems updating/download files.

When I run ./steam

I get the following.

Checking bootstrapper version ...
Use:

Create a Steam Account:
-create <usrname> <password> <question> <answer>

Install or updated HLDS:
-update <game> <installdir> <username> [<password> [Y]] Y => remember password

View installed versions:
-version

Now I have an account with steam, so I tried the second option

as follows:
[~}# ./steam -update dod . username [password[Y]]

I get as follows
Checking bootstrapper version ...
Updating Installation
Connection Closed by Peer.
Returned to prompt.

Now, the instructions say to go to

1) Edit ~/hlds/gamename/server.cfg (replace gamename with whatever you used before)
***This is where your server variables are stored. Reference the http://server.counter-strike.net config editor for easy coverage of the common ones.

But there are no gamename directories let along server.cfg files.

Anyone?

instead of
Code:
[~}# ./steam -update dod . username [password[Y]]
Try
Code:
./steam -command update -game dod -dir . -username <username> -password <password> -remember_password

They have the old steam binary, try ./steam -update

./steam update worked (with out the -)

I had to create a user, then switch to that user, cd to it home directory, wget the .bin file, chmod, ./hldsupdatetool.bin

then run ./steam update

Then, I was able to run the normal commands.

I.E. ./steam -command update -game "hl2mp" -dir .

Doing everything as root kept giving me problems.

Thanks for this solution (above).
I normally install game servers as root to avoid the myriad permission issues and whatnot. How non-intuitive that running as root would cause a problem!

Today was my first attempt at any type of HL/CS/Steam server.
I think that as of now the tutorials are a bit out of date.

I'm not complaining, I appreciate all the generous efforts of those who bother to write and maintain documents, and help in forums.

Thanks

No, the tutorials are up to date, however, the binary that steam provides is still the old version.

Then I suggest the tutorial be modified to include a recommendation about updating the steam executable.

As written, the tutorial didn't work for me.

Again, my thanks to all the people who provide help for newbie server admins such as myself.

Getting the right steam executable and a correct command line is a fundamental part of the install process.

I tried many times to get the tutorial's -username -password -email -question -answer command line to work.. turns out NONE of it is needed. I used none of those arguments yet succesfully installed srcds once I had the current steam executable and went by its usage suggestions.

Mad love to all the peeps that provide this website and forums, but please keep the tutorial up to date or all the other effort kind of loses value.

Sorry if I sound whiney, but its true :p

That said, thanks again for the assistance from the tutorial and forums, it allowed the birth of a new west coast source server: blarg.cc Come say hi!
