Page File vs. Physical RAM?
#1
Question
Hey everyone,

This might be a bit of a dumb question, but Im going to ask it anyway. On my dedicated server, I have 4GB of physical RAM. When I look in task manager, I rarely see even half of this being used... but I will see over 2GB in the page file area..

Is this normal? I would love my server to actually use all of this RAM it has...

Thanks!

So last night, I had about 100 people connected to the box, cpu usage was where I would expect... the memory usage was very low, and the page file was quite high... ?

I think most of the files that only have to be loaded and stored go in to the pagefile, when they are constantly needed and are high priority they will be in the physical RAM.

I'm sure there are quite some settings for pagefile usage and alike but I'm not sure anymore where those options are Big Grin

I think there's an option somewhere which will run the total SRCDS from memory, some people say it increases performance, I have yet to be convinced cause I don't see anything different at all...

Hey Drocona,

Could you elaborate on 'somewhere'? do you mean like an option in the server startup command line? Smile I'm interested in trying this out!

Hmm try heapsize in the startup line.
128MB of RAM- 16384
256MB of RAM- 65536
512MB of RAM- 262144
1GB of RAM- 524288
2GB of RAM- 1048576
So if you had 2GB of ram, it would look like: -heapsize 1048576
so in the start line add: -heapsize (amount of ram here)
I think this is what you want.

That just tells the srcds how much RAM you have, it will still use the pagefile on the harddisk though.
Also I've seen more problems WITH heapsize than without using it.

I found it by the way, had to edit some in registry, BACKUP THE REGISTRY BEFORE EDITING!!!!

Start => Run => REGEDIT

in regedit find:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management

Then click: "DisablePagingExecutive"
put it on "Decimal" and set "1" in the blank part, then save

That should do the job, it will stop putting memory to the HDD and just keep it in the memory, make sure you have more than 512MB ram to be safe to use it.

Drocona, what is heapsize supposed to do then? There is a lot of registry edits you can do to help boost your performence.

I think I actually already had that change done... only when i click the DWORD it is set to hex not decimal. when I change it and reopen it, it is right back to hex *shrug*[/align]

Hmm well I think that was SUPPOSED to do it, I've never bothered memory usage myself really but... if it doesn't work I don't know Big Grin maybe just disable total pagefile like set it to 0

right click "My computer" => properties

go to the "advanced" tab, click the Settings button for "performance"

then "virtual memory" => "change"

set "no paging file" instead of "custom size"/"automatic"

Ha, get this, I did that too... and it's still doing the same thing.. using hella PF and like 20% of ram
