Run Server and Play on Same machine?
#1
I can't seem to run a server and play my own server on the same computer. In fact I can't play any server if I run my server on the same computer. Anyone know a way around this? Or am I stuck?

Everyone else can join. I've tried both LAN and WAN and both get the same result. LAN IP is 192.168.0.1:27015. Wan IP is 24.x.x.x. It says "connecting" gets to two bars in the connecting screen in TF2 and then says "disconnected after 4 attempts to connect" or something like that.

So am I not able to host a server and play at the same time?

Noob question I know. Thnx.

Noone can tell me whether I can run my own server and play on it at the same time?

Like I said, I tried both IP addresses but I get a connection error after "4 retries" it says.

I believe -but may be wrong -that the srcds-Server blocks connection attempts from 127.0.0.1 (=localhost).
Doesn't TF2 support "Listen Server"?

Btw: running Server and client on the same machine is virtually impossible... it will always lag as neither the client nor the server get their calculations done in time...

Just use 2computers or rent a online-server Smile

Well if you had dual 8800 GT with 1 gb of video memory, a quad core Xean 3.6 ghz, and 2 gb of ram, i dont think you would lag Toungue.

Yes you will Smile
Sourcegames dont support multicore very well, they mostly use the primary core Smile

Btw: the graphics dont have anything to do with the lags Wink the server doesnt create any output
(well he does but even my 1990's CreativeBlaster can display them Toungue )

You wouldnt. Put srcds on one core, run the game on the other core. You can set programs to certain affinities The video i meant by Memory. 1 gb of memory you wont use ANY ram. All your ram, all 2 gbs of it, would go to srcds. And most operating systems use GUI. That takes up gpu or with lack of, CPU. Of course you could use Debian. You wouldnt lag one bit.

*happy* an other Debian addict Big Grin *happy*

Yes, thats possible, but that only works under Linux.
Windows puts parts of a program on the "primary" core, even if you are forcing a totally different one...

But it aint true that all the memory of CSS can be loaded into graphic ram... just think of the position calculation and the physic which HAVE
to be done by the CPU and not the GPU, and which always loads its cache into RAM or SWAP.

Fact is, that noone who could afford such a computer will run server and client on the same machine, but he will (mostly) use a second computer without graphic and run the srcds on that one Toungue

There are quad 3.0 Xeons. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117132
Considering the fact that people spend 3,000 dollars on gaming laptops, 1,200 dollar processor for a server is not bad. GPU, that is a graphics processor unit. Key word is processor lol. It is true that the cpu does do some work but with 4 3.00 ghz procesors you wont run out of power. 3.00 ghz processor can hold 45 100 tick rate slots. Plenty of power. CSS can run on 2 cores, srcds run on 2 cores. Yeah windows still keeps processors on the main cpu, who gives a shit about windoes eh? Use linux. If you must use windows, keep the primary core free, use two for css and one for srcds. There you go problem solved. Though I think it would be cheaper just to buy two computers Toungue. But you wouldnt have lag.
P.S. I heart Debian.

I can tell you that all the physics movement and stuff like that are 90% calculated by the CPU, Try any game with the same computer just different CPU's, for example in World in Conflict I get 40 average FPS on 2,4GHz and 60!! FPS on 3,2GHz.

(Overclocked my E6600)

I've said it before and will keep telling it:
Do NOT play and host a server from the same machine!!!
Use a listenserver if you want to play and host... (They didn't make the "Create game.." button for nothing)
and the SRCDS wasn't called DEDICATED server for nothing.

I get less FPS on an Athlon64 3000+...
But that may be due to the crap DirectX9 Support of Wine Smile (altough they have made great improvements Toungue)

Some games tried to do that on the GPU core, but then your GPU isnt fast enough Smile
For perfect usage (of supported games) get a 3d acceleration card Toungue

I would already be happy if I had enough money to change my power supply... it's not powerful enough Smile )

I have a dual quad core clovertown's at 3.0 gihertz with 5 mb of mem.

I only want to run the server so that me and a couple friends can test a map we are making at the same time.

so if I can't do it fine. But if I can, I want to, no matter how much lag is involved. Its all about the map making Toungue.

Save the trouble and run a listenserver with the create game button inside CSS or whatever game you are running. Then load the map there, running a dedicated server is a whole lot of unnecessary work for testing a simple map.
