Really Weird
#1
Ok i finally got my new servr up and running and it is as follows:
Amd Athlon 64X2 4600+
2 gigs of corsair RAM
Asrock Motherboard
250 gigs of hd space
yadadada.
So i start up my server, first thing i notice is how the screen itself is lagging rather bad, but thats besides the point. Then i see i am getting a constant 64 fps. Now on a different computer with people actually using it while running a server, and it has 1.6 gighertz cpu, 256 mb of ram, it got atleast 150 fps. Now why is that?
My new kickass computer gets kicked in the ass by a non kickass computer. lol Please help me.
Thanks in advance.

It's possible that you are talking about two different kinds of FPS here. There is server-side FPS and client-side FPS. It's possible that your server is only running at 64 frames because that's the limitation built into Windows when you aren't running the srcdsfpsbooster. It sounds like the 150 frames is from one of your clients connected to the server playing.

If that's not it, then it sounds like you are running in GUI mode and playing on the same computer that you are hosting the server on and this is not recommended. Considering that you have a dual-core CPU you could try setting the server to a different core that CS would be on and try playing like that.

TBH, I'm just kinda talking out of my ass because I don't think that I understand what you are saying lol

Here's what I think, and am pretty sure this is whats going on Toungue

The 1.6GHz is an older system (prolly P3 or alike) which doesnt have the limits the new procs have. I think you can run 1000FPS on that machine with an fpsbooster on, which you won't make on the newer system (max 512)

Also make sure you set the srcds.exe process affinity to 1 core.

whoa whoa hold on here. New processors can't handle FPS past 512?
Because right now on my server I'm running XP and the cap is 512MB and I'm running a test of Server 2003 on my test machine (older) and it's hitting higher FPS and I attributed it to the O/S. This ruins my life lol

You can run higher FPS by enchanging the OS it's running on but the gains are so low it's kinda useless.
From my test performance goes down beyond 700FPS, you get weird glitches and doors stuttering etc etc.
1000FPS servers are useless on the source engine, you might remember of 1.6 that everything simply moves a lot faster, this is not the case in the source engine.

I always keep the OS stock, put fpsbooster on and hit 512 FPS which is more than enough.

CPU's can hold but the newer ones have a limit that can be eliminated by software, like linux 1000Hz kernel and windows tuning.

On older CPU's this limit isnt built in and they can be brought to 1000FPS by simply turning on the fpsbooster and fps_max 1000. But again this will crash all performance. (I'm using a P3 1Ghz for testing purposes which can easily boost to 1000FPS without modifications)

Interesting.
The reason why I was looking to upgrade is because right now on my 20 man public server I'm getting FPS drops with is resulting in poor performance. The CPU/memory/ is definitely not the bottleneck. I think my players would be willing to deal with some slight glitches for better performance. You don't happen to have a guide available on the modifications you've made to make the FPS increase?

Thanks for your time dude! Smile

No problem lol im learning. Btw another weird thing is that if i try to say changlevel, it says im not running the server. And i am using the console not GUI. Its really strange and even the computer seems to be slower then it should.

Could you provide a screenshot of what happens after your put in the changelevel command? Thanks!

Try this console start:

Code:
-game cstrike -console -secure -maxplayers 20 +fps_max 1000 -tickrate 100 +map cs_assault +port 27015 +mp_dynamicpricing 0 -ip xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

Download and run this:

It'll increase your server-side FPS Wink
