need some help and advice
#1
Hello all,

Thanks to you guys I finally got my hl2dm server up and running! But most clients that join my server experience bad lag/choke even though their ping is fine 30 to 60ms! I'm on a Adsl2 plan with excellent sync of 23080/1024 and my server is a AMD Athlon XP 2600+ with 1GB of ram running ubuntu. At the moment it is set to 8 players max with 33tick! These are my server rates...

sv_minrate 5000
sv_maxrate 8000
sv_maxupdaterate 60
sv_minupdaterate 20
sv_maxcmdrate 60
sv_mincmdrate 20
sv_unlag 1

I have tried many different rates and I just recently added in the cmd rate plus update rate. It would be very appreciated if you guys could help me out again!

Thanks,
David

PS: Also another question... how many source/srcds servers could I run on a dedicated Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 with 100mbit connection in a datacentre?

For your E6600 question - rates wouldn't be a problem. As for how many servers. On an overclocked E6300 i can get 6 11 slot 100 tick servers on it. So for a E6600, i would expect 5-6 as well, 3 to a core.

Would this be the E6600 in a datacenter or your server at home?

For everyone benefit and people who dont already know:

Quote:What is choke?
Choke is a measure of how much data is being restricted on your computer. When playing games a lot of information is being sent backwards and forwards containing every detail of the game. During heavy games this information can get very high, with every bullet, movement and chat line being sent to your computer.

The game servers are on very large Internet connections capable of transfering several megabytes per second. Most computers on the other hand are restricted by how much they can receive and send. If you are on a standard 56K modem you can only receive about 5-6 kilobytes per second. This is more than is normally required.

Half-Life / Half-Life 2 has the ability to limit how much information it requests, to save clogging up your connection. If it goes over this then you will get what is known as Choke. Choke is a measure of what is missing. So if the server runs out of bandwidth everybody gets choke, if your computer runs out of bandwidth, you alone will get choke.

You can help improve this by adjusting your Half-Life / Half-Life 2's "rate" setting. This will set the correct maximum limit for your connection. For a quick guide use these settings:

If you are on a 56K modem then you want to set your rate to between 3500 and 4500, experiment with your settings and see what gives you the best results.

If you are on ISDN you want between 6000 and 8000, and Dual ISDN between 14000 and 16000. If you are on anything faster, such as ADSL or Cable then you want to set your rate to 25000 at first.

You can set your rate by typing "rate" followed by the number in your console.

So to sum up, either your server is running out of bandwidth or your clients don't have proper rate settings for their connection.

However, another factor on the server end could be running out of memory and using page filing.

that for clearing that up! they say it even happens when there is 2 people on the server! my server, the 2600+ with 1gb of ram, its average usage is 8% cpu and 110mb ram. i really don't know whats causing the choke and i don't experience it since i'm local and its really annoying problem for others. i was just wondering if i purchase a E6600 in a datacenter how many games could i get onto it, thats all.

Weird, i know dracona is having problems with choke, but only on high slot servers i hear.

Ubuntu desktop? Its not the best for running a server (i've tried!), especially with its 100hz kernel. You could try the server edition with a high hz kernel (even though server is 33 tick, it may stablise your server FPS more)

But yeah as for the E6600, i would think you should be able to fit 6 war servers on it, as for publics.. 3-4 @ 66tick maybe? Not too sure about CPU requirements for high slot servers at 66tick.

thanks! though I don't think its ubuntu thats causing the problem since they said it was the same when I ran srcds on my powerful xp machine even with the affinity set to one core, priority set to realtime and having the fps booster! man this is really bugging me since people are leaving our server constantly!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My choke problem was my own stupid fault, somehow my client settings were locked to "rate 10000", that's why I got the choke... server was running bloody perfect!
