Hi guys, I am having this problem 2.

I have tried running my server with "srcds -game hl2mp -maxplayers 32 -autoupdate". The GUI opens and I also set that to 32 but when i start the server maxplayers is set to 16...? The server is running on a dual core 64 bit AMD 3000+ with 4 gigs of ram / 30mbps down 5 mbps up cable connection. I would like to believe that no built-in limiter is triggering this downgrade as the hardware is quite overkill and the connection should be enough.

I setup this server by downloading the update tool and, after downloading the game with the tool, I immediately tried to launch the server with the 32 players switch and it did not work. No configuration changes have been made to the server at this point.

I then tried setting "maxplayers 32" and "mp_maxplayers 32" in a server.cfg that I downloaded from Steam and this also does not work.
I also added the -console switch to run in console to no avail. Interestingly enough, running the server in a console window actually introduced some lag into the server. Ping times were not affected.

Any ideas?

That shouldn't matter, -maxplayers -port and -ip have been added a while ago as startup parameters. You can however still use the cvars +maxplayers +hostport and +ip.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for info but I have also tried +maxplayers 32 and this also results in a 16 player server. I downloaded the update tool again, downloaded the server files to a clean directory, and tried again with no success.

Just mentioned + because on one of the old linux binaries there was a problem with -maxplayers where it didn't work, just checking.

maxplayers must be defined somewhere to set it to 16 players..

Understood, thanks for the info.

I have read on Steams forum that you need a custom server dll to have more then 16 players in hl2mp. Apparently CS works fine with over 16. I have see users here post that 32 players works fine but most of them have servers running 16 players. Also, steams own server console allows me to pic any even number of players from 18 to 32. But now I have downloaded the updatetool and files several times and its still not working.

Can someone confirm for me that they have used srcds.exe to run hl2mp with an 'out of the box' configuration and been able to have more then 16 players?

Thank you again for all of the information.

You need the custom file(s) for more than 16 players on hl2mp. And those who have the modded files don't seem to be offering their knowledge to others.

In some file (or multiple files?) there's a set max of 16, so even when you use maxplayers it resets it.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the update. I wanted to post that I downloaded the SDK and was successfully able to alter the max players for deathmatch. I did this by searching the server.dll project and replacing instenses of max_players and max_clients. I can now run a server with as many players as i want. I made a server with 128 player max and had about 20 people on it. It played like any other server with 20 players.

Unfortunity their was a side effect. The new server dll is considered a Mod and theirfor in order to connect to the server you have to download the mod.

I wanted to post this to ask anyone that knows how to tweak the server.dll or compilation process to allow a standard client to connect to a server with a non-standard server.dll to speak up! Please! You all know you want to play on a 128 player server!!! Big Grin
(realisticly, I am looking to host a 64 player team deathmatch server that will be running on some beafy dedicated hardware. I think it will be a nice addition to the few servers that are still around.)

Have you tried a hex editor? Also, what did you use to compile the server.dll, Visual C++ 2005?
